  • Thanks Martin for the information given on your site. I hunted out correspondence from when we remortgaged 18 months ago and discovered we had been overcharged £100. I downloaded your sample letter and sent it to the Halifax on 5th Feb. Today received a letter offering us £100 "as a goodwill gesture". Would never have thought about checking the fees had it not been for this site. Thanks again. Mary :j
  • Fantastic - got £75 off the Halifax with a 3 minute phone call- easiest £75 I ever made!
  • Hi all,

I had an Alliance & Leicester mortgage from 1997 until summer 2005. They charged me £295 MEAF.

I sent the sample letter asking for a £205 refund. I can't find the original paperwork but £90, which is the figure quoted on this website for A&L MEAFs, sounds familiar.

    I received the following today.

As promised in our previous correspondence, I have looked into the issue you have raised and hope we are now able to agree the way forward.

Alliance & Leicester first introduced a single administration fee of £195 from 5 January 2004 called the Early Closure Administration Charge. The fee was increases in August 2004 to £295 and this has been detailed in the leaflet that would have accompanied your Annual Mortgage Statement each year since then. We have decided to reduce the fee payable to customers who took out their mortgage before August 2004 to the original level of £195 – a reduction of £100.

Having reviewed our records, I am pleased to enclose a cheque for £100 refund against the £295 Redemption Administration Charge that was incurred on closure of your account.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss any aspect of this matter further. If I have not heard from you within the next 7 days, I will regard your complaint as closed.

A partial success but should I continue for the full amount? Any tips greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jake
  • Hi,
I sent letters to all the companies that I have held a mortgage with since 1995.
    Cov B/S - no refund.
    Abbey - received £30
ALLIANCE & LEICESTER - REFUNDED ME £100. Apparently they quoted £195 to move my mortgage then charged £295 two years later. :j

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!:T
Sold house in December & paid £225 sealing fee to the Royal bank of Scotland.
Saw this article, checked my original document which said £75  sealing fee so sent a letter on Monday (didn't send a £10 cheque) and today (Thursday) received a letter saying £150 has been credited to my bank account (as a good will gesture!! Ha! right, but I had the last laugh because I got £150 back no thanks to the RBS!!)

Fantastic website, can't say it highly enough!!
Am now debt free, and starting a whole new chapter in my life.:j
  • I wrote to Standard Life Bank on the 8th February asking for a refund of the £150.00 redemption fee that they charged me in November 1983. The fee when I took out the mortgage back in 2000 was £nil.

Success! A cheque for £150.00 arrived this morning. :j
  • £146 from C&G and £150 from Birmingham Midshires this morning!!!
  • Hi,

Can you claim the deeds handling fee or just the redemption discharge fee??

    Thanks.

Is it worth looking at a mortgage before 2000?? I had one with the legal and general then.

    thanks

  • I got £125 - plus £15 interest - from C&G within 5 days of writing to them. Like others have said, it's the easiest money I've ever made! Thanks for the tip. :j
  • Well I used the letter from this website asking the cheltenham and gloucester how much my initial mortage quote for the admin fee was and how much I was charged, I am astonished I got a letter this morning saying I was owed a refund of £125 plus interest an the cheque would be with me in the next 7 days, no argument or ifs and buts.....

Now waiting for the halifax to write to me hopefully will be the same good news

ALL I CAN SAY IS WELL DONE MARTIN AND THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND ADVICE I AM WELL CHUFFED !!!!!!!
