Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

  • I took out a mortgage with Abbey in Dec 2004 when their exit admin fee stood at £99. When I remortgaged in Dec 2006, the fee had risen to £225, so I wrote to Abbey in January requesting that the £126 difference be refunded. Abbey declined the request.

At this point, the FSA released their guidelines, so I wrote to Abbey again saying that I was still unhappy and mentioned the FSA's guidelines. This time they sent a cheque for the full £225 'as a gesture of goodwill'.

  • After reading these postings decided to try and obtain a refund from the Coventry Building Society for part of the Redemption Fee when moving 18 months ago.

After using the template letter to make my complaint I was over the moon to receive a cheque for £100 in yesterdays post.

All completed in less than two weeks.

Well done Martin, well done Coventry BS.

  • Another success with the Woolwich! sent them a letter with which they requested I call their special helpline.

When doing so straight away £180 refund +4% interest!

    Thanks very much!
  • Thanks to Martin Lewis I wrote to Standard Life two weeks ago, following my mortgage redemption in August 2006. My paperwork only went back to 2002 stating a £50 difference in discharge fee (was £150 in 2002 but I paid £200 in August '06), so wrote asking for a £50 refund, but I was absolutely elated when I received a nice letter on 16/2 with a cheque for £200!!!! They'd calculated that I was owed £150 refund from a mortgage I took out with them in 1999 plus £50 for my most recent one.

Thanks Martin for all your great advice. You're a top bloke.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I remember at the time asking about the high exit charges, but was fobbed off.

I fell much better now! I didn't have the full info so I used template letter # asking the Coventry to confirm what I thought were the original charges.

A cheque for £100 arrived a week later. Marvellous!
  • Used your letter with Halifax to claim £100 (difference between original mortgage in 200 which was £50 and my final exit fee) and received a letter today offering "as a goodwill gesture" to settle my claim as a full and final settlement of my complaint. Great result at the end of an otherwise bad day!

£150 refund appeared in my bank account today, refund from a completed mortgage at the beginning of Feb 07 when they charged me £225 exit fees, it was stated at £75 when I took the mortgage out in 2001.

The letter they sent me at the weekend advising of the refund was bizarrely worded as if they knew nothing of this FSA report: "thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and we are sorry you have not been happy with our service", and goes on to claim the refund is a "goodwill gesture". Hang on, my cash in the first place, cough it up!
  • Just made one simple phonecall to the Halifax (using Martin's "SAY NO TO 0870" for a freephone number) and have been promised a cheque for £35.
Not a huge ampount, but it was ssssoooooooo sssssimpleeeeeee I wanted to encourage others!

Thanks again, Martin. You're like butter in the sun the way you and your website spread so easily!
