We sent our letter to the Halifax at the beginning of last week, have today received a letter saying that we are entitled to £125 refund as a gesture of goodwill!
Thank you very much Martins money saving tips.0 -
My Halifax mortgage taken out in 1996 quoted a discharge fee of £40 and Deed tranfer of £15. When I paid it off last year I was charged £175 and £50 respectively.
In a quick phone call this afternoon they agreed (subject to confirmation in writing) to refund the difference in the Discharge Fee.
Do the same rules apply to reclaiming the Deeds Despatch Fee?0 -
After reading this thread today, i decided to get the paperwork out, from when i redeemed my mortgage in August 2006.
My redemption fee was £275 but the original contract stated it would be £150, i thought i'd give it a bash and phoned Barclays:
The first person i spoke to gave me the special redemption overcharge phone number - presume there's a call for it!!!!
Anyway phoned the number, gave my account number and said i wanted to query my redemption fee - she replied 'oh yes i see, it should have been £150 you were charged £275 so if you give me your bank account details i'll put £125.00 plus 2.64 interest in your account in 3-5 working days is that ok?
Is that ok!!! - how easy was that - Cheers Barclays and Cheers Martin:rotfl:
The Special number to ring is 0800 0234180 (it didn't even cost me for the call!!!):T0 -
I used Martin's template letter, having realised that we had just re-mortgaged after 3 years. Halifax replied within 4 days with an agreement to full and final settelment of £100, this being the difference of the MEAF over the 3 years. Fantastic - many thanks!!!0

Just wanted to tell you, phone the Woolwich this morning, after reading this thread last night. Amazed, i didnt know anything about this refund business either!!
Anyhow, as i was saying, rang Woolwich, gave name, account number and address. He said "Yes the fee was £195 when you took Mortgage, but paid £275". "We will send you £80.62p inc Interest, can i have your Bank Details".
2 Mins and its DONE! He even said " Enjoy the rest of your evening".
Lovely Jubbly - So Easy unreal. They must be shedding out hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds. Serves them right the gits.
PS - Does anybody know about ABBEY? We had a Mortgage with Abbey in 2002, redeemed it 2004. I cant remember what the fee was when taking it out, and what the fee we paid upon redemption. Can anyone help with this information??
MANY THANKS!0 -
After reading about this in Moneysavingexpert.com contacted Halifax on 7 February - they advised they owed me £100 from when I changed mortgage companies in November 2006 - cheque for full amount arrived 2 days later after 1 phone call - success!0

Following Martins advice i sent the template latter to Alliance and Leicester. I have today recieved a cheque for £100. However i feel this is not enough as the orginal fee quoted was £150 and i paid £295. A&L say they informed me by leaflet sent with a mortgage statement of the increase!!
I intend to pursue it further and was wondering if anyone else has pushed it further with A&L or just accepted the £100 which seems to be the standard refund for them.
Thanks0 -
Hi,
I wrote to Lloyds TSB on 7/7 and this morning received a letter confirming that they would be sending me a refund of £100 plus interest of £21.29.
Not a bad result for 15 minutes work and a 2nd class stamp.0
