  • Just got refund from Woolwich. There was a direct phone number for this very thing on the financial ombudsmen website. Quick phonecall and I'm £100 better off!
  • Just spoke to Alliance & Leicester after reading Martins article about Mortgage Exit Fees. After a few simple questions they agreed that I had over paid £100 and would therefore refund my account immediately. I also know that if you ring the Halifax they already have a department set up specifically dealing with refund requests. Worth a phone call and it was really no hastle at all. Cheers Martin.

We recently claimed from the Woolwich.
We were advised that they will be also paying 4% compounded intrest from your redeeming date.
Trust you are all claiming what is rightfully yours.
  • Just wanted to say that I rang Woolwich this morning, they agreed to refund £180 + £5 interest and when I checked my current account this evening the money was already refunded! Also I don't know whether this has been posted before but Woolwich have a dedicated freephone number specifically for this which will save a lot of time getting transferred to different departments. The tel no is 08000234180 - hope this helps someone!
  • I recently paid off my mortgage with Halifax and was charged £225 for the privilage after reading this thread I phoned Halifax and yes there is a phone option!! After a brief conversation I was told I was in line for a refund of £135.00. Great news, it was worth spending the time and effort chasing this as they will only refund if you complain!!
  • Hi

I used the supplied template and sent it to my previous building society, Cheltenham & Gloucester, late last week. I was charged £225 admin fee about 18 months ago. Received a letter today (14th Feb), and I will get all that back plus interest. Very pleased. Good prompt customer service from Kim Oakes, Customer Operations Manager at C&G. No problems at all. Well worth the 10 minutes spent getting my old mortgage details, completing the template correctly and sticking a first-class stamp on the envelope.

Many thanks to Martin and the Forum.
  • After reading about these exit fees on moneytips and the chat forum, gave Halifax a quick call, they were very helpful and gave me a breakdown of what I might get back, said it would take up to 4 weeks. A week later I received a cheque in the post for £110!. Not bad for a 5 minute phone call. Give it a try! Thanks Martin:T
  • I've registered a request with Abbey using the standard template for a refund and they have acknowledged receipt, but now sent me a further form with some additional (simple) questions like date of opening and closing - all information they already know - and asking for us to sign the form and return it.

However there is a declaration as part of the form which says "Please sign to acknowledge that you are entitled to this refund and that no other claims have (or will) be made in relation to the repayment fee on the above mortgage account"

As we don't yet know how much, if anything they are offering to refund should we sign and agree to this?

    Any thoughts? Thanks
  • Received a cheque from the Alliance & Leicester for £100 today, original MEAF £195, charged £295. That's £212 I've received in total including the Woolwich. Now to chase the Abbey to see if they owe me anything.

My only question is why hasn't the OP been thanked more?
    Next year we'll be millionaires!
  • After reading your article I contacted both Woolwich (mortgage2002-2004) and Alliance & Leicester (mortgage 2004-2006) I am now £211.50 richer!

Woolwich said straight away that i was overcharged by £100 & put it in to my bank account 3 days later, with £11.50 interest.
Alliance & Leicester confirmed I was overcgarged by £100 too, and asked me to put it in writing, referring to my conversation, and i would get £100 back , but no interest,so he thought - boo!!

    RESULT!!!

I've told all my friends about your fab site, and I think we may have to go out & celebrate our unexpected windfall!
