  • I would go for the full £200 if there is evidence that you did not sign a contract with any fees mentioned. If the boot were on the other foot you bet they would they would chase you for the full amount you owed!
  • I used the template letter to The Mortgage Business, who charged me £250 exit fee last month - (the latest figure i agreed to was £125). i have now recieved a letter from them stating that they would like to offer, as a gesture of goodwill, a refund of the fee in full. WOW WOW WOW. 1 phone call later and i am waiting for £250 to go into my bank.

Dont wait for another second.. do it now! Before they get their act together and realise their mistake!:j
  • Sent a letter on 02nd Feb having had a mortgage with them from 2000-2006. Just had a phone call to say they are refunding the full £200 MEAF direct in to my bank account in the next few days.

Rang the halifax today and will be getting a refund of £100! Yah! :j Asked about interest owed and got told they wouldn't make a decision about interest till the 28th.

Putting it towards my new cooker appeal - all donations welcome!!:p

I have my original mortgage contract but i cannot seem to find any reference to the MEAF. I know the admin charge is £175 but how can i tell if this is the correct cost or not
  • phoned the halifax friday to ask about the exit fee was told straight away that i would recieve a cheque for £75.They also asked if i would like to claim back the extre exit fees on a seperate Mortgage that i started in 1985 and finished in 1999! again i was told i as due a refund of £75..... both cheques were recieved in the post the next day.
  • Queer one this, rang Halifax, within minutes told I would get £35 pounds.

2 says later full and final letter and cheque on doormat.

Being an inquisitive sort I thought this was not so good, rang Halifax and queried what dates they worked on and they stated from 1993 to 2004 when mortage cleared (YIPPEEEEEEE)

However my mortgage was from 1983 to 2004 not sure what to do now.

I can only think that when we increased and moved house twice each time the mortgage is new and they work on last one only.

I have queried why on final papers the "Settlement Charges" were £400 is this different?

  • Read Martins article on MEAF. Sent the relevant details to the Halifax, my claim being for £115, and within 10 days I had received confirmation of a refund. As gesture of good will, the Halifax have offered a £155 refund. Did they offer this to keep me quiet, as there may be more I am entitled to, in order to keep their losses to a minimum. Do I accept or do I see if there is more on the table! Watch this space. Thanks Martin L for the interesting article. Will keep reading your excellent page.
  • I also got this letter and form in responce to the letter i had sent to Abbey. I agree i think it is a "time wasting exercise"

I did ring the Abbey and to be honest the guy on the phone didnt know too much about it and told me that he was told to transfer all calls relating to this to a pre-recorded message ?! which i didnt listen to - thought id follow their seemingly long winded process and send their form back !

Is it just Abbey ? has anyone had any success with Abbey as yet ?

mrtickle - i rang the number on the bottom of the letter - they gave me 0845 6000 346 - let me know how you get on

    kx

p.s how far back can you go ? do i contact each of my mortgage providers in say past 10 years or is there a set period like the reclaiming of bank charges was max 6 years ?

I've received the same letter too, and I'm very angry about it. It is basically a time-wasting exercise: they don't need any more details from me at all. They've pre-filled in the whole thing using the information THAT I SUPPLIED IN MY LETTER TO THEM! The only parts left blank are the address (already in their records, and it matches the address in their "your details" section unsurprisingly), and my signature. Well duh. I signed the letter I sent them!

So now, I'm expected to post that form back to them signed, at my expense, wasting more time and money. No telephone number or fax number in sight anywhere  .

Well it's just not good enough, Abbey. You're going to get a piece of my mind tomorrow, and because of your tactics I'm going to claim the interest on the £126 as well.
