Pay back time methinks, go for it!!!! Put all communication in writing if they are a bit arsy!!!!
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Remortgaged in 2005 from the Co-operative bank. They charged me 110 pounds more than my original contract stated in 2003. One phone call and the amount has been refunded into my account 5 days later. Thanks Martin - without your newsletter I would be 110 pounds poorer!
  • I've got a tiny suggestion .......
Another site that shall remain nameless has a running total of the savings their visitors have made in a similar thread.
Why not do the same here .........
then we can all have a party together !
  • Hello

I'm a bit confused we took out our mortgage in 2003 and recently because of the shift in interest rates wanted to move our mortgage but Northern Rock was going to hit us with such high early repayment charges that we had to change to a different mortgage but still with themselves. They have charged us £295.00 for what's called a "Mortgage Review Fee" and £249.00 for an additional borrowing fee. I was wondering if I could query this "Review Fee".
From my previous records this figures used to stand at £250.00. Would I have a claim on this, as I haven't changed to another mortgage broker I'm really not sure.

    Hope someone can help

    Thank you

  • Thanks Martin - saw you on BBC Breakfast and saw an article in the Financial Mail. I moved house and remortgaged, leaving the Marsden BS in April 2006, I'd only been with them since 2002. I knew I'd paid £150 on leaving but didn't have a copy of my original contract. Sent a letter on 5th Feb, got £100 cheque with explanation on 9th Feb. Said they'd reviewed their policy and checked my contract and contract said £50, turns out they have increased their fees by 200% in four years but didn't quibble about giving me the money back, if you don't ask you don't get. Well done on the campaign!

I took out a mortgage with Leeds Permanent BS in March 1993 and redeemed it with Halifac plc (as they had then become) in December 2000. I phoned up on Wednesday afternoon around 4.30pm and they agreed a £35 refund within 5 minutes. This morning (Saturday) the cheque arrived, way less than 28 days.

    Thanks Martin!
  • Just received a cheque from the halifax for my last mortgage, 2 days after I rang them.
Was on the phone less than three minutes with them.

  • I sent off a model letter from This Is Money, received a letter from Halifax this morning offering me £175 in full settlement (although covering letter states £75, acceptance form states £175, think there's a typo so I need to write to them to clarify this) - this is for the full exit cost, although my exit fee was £150 for the exit plus £50 deeds release. I stated in my letter that no exit fee costs were detailed in my initial mortgage offer or the contract I signed.

What would others do - should I accept the £175 or should I try to press for £200?

And my current provider has a set fee of £125, is it likely these fees will have to come down in light of the FSA ruling?
  • Just thought I'd let you know our success with Co-op Bank. We were charged £195 when we moved our mortgage from them 2 years ago. Checking back, the fees when we took out the mortgage 2 years previously were just £85!We used your template letter and were contacted 4 days later by the bank offering us £110 refund. Thanks a million!
  • thanks martin; got the cheque today.
