Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

I moved house and redeemed my mortgage with the Woolwich in February last year. I heard about the whole thing on R4 and checked out Martin's website to get the low down.
As a result, I sent the Woolwich a letter last week, based on the templates on the site. Was asked to call them and will be receiving £187.16 in the next few days - fab!
Thank Martin - I am not exaggerating when I say that you and your website (and everyone who contributes to it!) have saved me hundreds of pounds.

I called the halifax today and was promised £125.00 refund. This is a relly good tip. I moved house so they're giving a refund on both exit fees. :beer:0

Update to my previous thread - after my success with the Woolwich, my husband just called them up (he redeemed his mortgage there in August 07) and he will now be receiving £183.
They now have a dedicated line with very nice people on it. All you need is your mortgage number and the address of the property, plus your bank details.

Wasnt going to bother as I'm in the middle of reclaiming bank charges and was going to wait until that was sorted. After reading Martins newsletter I read his article and just called Halifax on 08457 27 37 47 Option 3 on the menu.
Spoke to a nice guy, gave my roll number, confirmed mortgage taken out in '98 exit fee was £50, when we remortgaged in 2005 we were charged £175. Cheque on its way to us for £125!

Success!! £110 winging its way to us. One thing I wasn’t clear about was the phraseology. The original deal said “Sealing Deeds £85”. The final bill on repayment charged us for a “Repayment Administration Fee” of £195 – were they the same thing?
It appears they must have been........ The Woolwich rang this morning to say they are crediting the difference to my bank account today. Thanks Martin.0 -

Actually they don't even need the mortgage number, I've just said I'm not sure given my name and address and they found it from there.0 -
Just rang Halifax who we left in Nov 06, to ask if we were owed any money back. I'd disposed of all our mortgage details so wasn't sure if they would be forthcoming, but the fella at the Halifax was lovely. He searched for me by name and told me what the amount was when I took the mortgage out (£75 in Feb 2004) and told me that I had been charged £175 in exit fees. He then told me they would send a cheque out within 28 days (although he said most are arriving within a week) for £100!! Nice one! :T :jThe best things in life are free - Janet and Luther:

Having sold my property in December I checked my paperwork on Martin's advice and found that I paid a £250 discharge of mortgage fee with the Northern Rock. I checked my mortgage offer and found no mention of such a fee. I phoned the Northern Rock on Monday and questioned the fee, on Tuesday they sent me a letter saying they would refund me £55 as the original fee when I signed up to the mortgage in 2004 was £195.00. This was after one phone call so make sure you phone even if you don't have the paperwork as they seem to happy to refund on a telephone call alone !!!!!!0

:T Heard about your site on Monday...read about the exit fee rip-off and contacted Cheltenham & Gloucester today. Charged £225 to exit last month..should have been £90 (2001 fees) Agreed to refund the difference immediately with interest. A big thankyou well deserved. It certainly pays to ask:j0
