Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

As an afterthought, after the Halifax agreeing to refund me £75, I rang and asked for interest.
I was told that they didn't pay any interest because the leaving fee had not been deemed as "illegal".
I was asked if I still wanted them to send me the £75 or whether I wanted to contest it.
I lost my nerve and accepted the £75.0 -
Hello all!
My first post so please bear with me!!
Has anyone had any success with Natwest yet?
I called them today and was advised that they haven't finalised their policy as yet but were happy to confirm that I paid £225 as MEAF last year. They wouldn't tell me over the phone however how much was in my original agreement but they have agreed to send me out a copy of this which will take about a week apparently!
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences?
Thanks0 -
BigAde wrote:Thanks for this... just got off the phone to Woolwich. Very quick and easy. Just gave the account number and my name and address and they said they owed me £97 inc interest... Can't find all the paperwork to see if this is correct or not, so just accepted it!
Easy money. :money:
Did the same as you today, a credit of £253.99 is on the way to my bank from the Woolwich0 -

MSE Martin is wonderful:A
The Cheltenham & Gloucester are sending us a cheque for over £200!:D
I dialled 0845 603 1637 and pressed option 5 (don't wait to listen to all the options;) ) to query the MEAF.
I don't know if I spoke to a dosey customer service rep but the first figure she gave me was ~£45! I asked her "Why so low?". She then said she'd done the calculation on the wrong year. Then she came up with ~£150.
I had some rough figures worked out and that still seemed low. I asked her to check again because...."according to the figures on the MSE web site, it should be a higher amount.":D
They couldn't tell me when I first rang, so it needed another call but I'm so pleased that I held out for the right amount.
If you prepare your figures before you make the call, you'll know whether the amount they're quoting is in the right ball park.;)
Good Luck everyone. I hope you all have a happy outcome like us.:j

s1mon wrote:Following todays Money Tip, I phoned the Halifax on their normal mortgages number. 08457 27 37 47 Option 3 gives you the menu with the choice to discuss the FSA announcement on exit fees.
I didn't have my roll number to hand, but they found my mortgage details through my current account with them. A £75 cheque should be with me within £28 days.
The lady I spoke to said they are having a lot of calls about this subject...
Simon
Thanks for the number.
When you called them - how did you start the conversation? And what did you 'actually' tell them?

Rang Halifax this morning - I had an 18 month mortgage from 2000 - 2001 and am due a £25 refund which should be in the post shortly.
(Exit fee in 2000 was £50 and it went up to £75 in 2001)0 -
Many thanks, Martin. Just called the Halifax, and they promised me a £100 cheque. It takes less than 5 minutes to sort!0

I took a Halifax mortgage on July 2001 and re mortgaged on Sep 2002.
Apparently the fee was quoted as £75 and apparently £75 is what i paid on Sep 02 - that's what they said to me.
Now I've just taken her word for it as i have no paper work to back it up.0 -
Thanks Martin and crew
Phoned the Halifax. Very helpful - 100GBP on the way!:T0
