Hi, I am currently switching my mortgage from Halifax and I phoned and asked the what fee I would have to pay, They told me £225. Will they automatically help themselves to this or do I have to pay them direct? Also the mortgage states a fee of £100, when do I query? Sorry to sound thick but I havent got a clue!!0

Thanks for this... just got off the phone to Woolwich. Very quick and easy. Just gave the account number and my name and address and they said they owed me £97 inc interest... Can't find all the paperwork to see if this is correct or not, so just accepted it!
Easy money. :money:Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.0 -
Hi,
I remortgaged from halifax to nationwide in november 06. Exit fee £175. Called Halifax yesterday stating how unreasonable charge was and within a couple of hours i had a call back stating i will get a full refund.
Many thanks to Martin and all those who make this site possible.

thanks to chivers1977 for that message, had a nightmare time redeeming my mortgage in Dec 2005/Jan2006 due to incompetence in my local branch of the Woolwich and during that time the redemption fee went up from £195 to £275. I queried it at the time but they insisted I pay it to redeem my mortgage and then they mislaid my deeds. Got £110 in interest repaid to me but am now determined to get the redemption fee back from the £50 I signed up for so £225 - worth having! Thanks to all these useful threads.0

Hi Martin & team.
Just rang the Halifax. Discharge fee in '97 was £40 and then £175 when I moved in '05. Told that I should recieve a cheque for the difference (£135) in the next 28 days. All done in a 2 minute phone call!
Thanks for the heads up. Keep up the good work0 -
Has anyone had any luck with Nationwide Building Society?
I will be hunting through my paperwork tonight when i get home.0 -
Phone Abbey today concerning exit fee paid in April 2006. (£225.00). I was informed that they have made no decision and will not until 28th February. They asked me to write and they will aknowledge in 8 working days and give a written answer after 28 days. I will now write and tell them that I will expect interest if they are going to prevaricate in this way.0

Only knew my mortgage account nos with Northern Rock but applied. Just received letter stating they are sending me a cheque for £200!
thanks!0 -
Following todays Money Tip, I phoned the Halifax on their normal mortgages number. 08457 27 37 47 Option 3 gives you the menu with the choice to discuss the FSA announcement on exit fees.
I didn't have my roll number to hand, but they found my mortgage details through my current account with them. A £75 cheque should be with me within £28 days.
The lady I spoke to said they are having a lot of calls about this subject...

Martin,
You are a star. We mortgaged with Northern Rock in August 1997 and left them in March 2002. At that time I quibbled and wrote to them about the increase in exit fees to no avail. Sent a letter last Saturday using the template and Hey Presto their letter, received today, says they will now be refunding the £60 overcharge!
Shame it isn't plus interest!! ... but then we can't have it all.
Thanks
