i paid off my halifax mortgage last week, thoguht id have a shot at trying to get the £115 repayment admin fee refunded but just spoke to girl who said because the mortgage was signed up for in 2004 and the repayment admin fee has not changed i cannot get this refunded.
is it worth sending template for refund inlight of this information or not?
i think i have misunderstood the refunding.

The whole thing is based on the difference between what it was when you took it out and what it was when you redeemed the mortgage. You can ask for the difference back (unless the FSA have approved the difference as being reasonable). Hi Martin,
As a direct result of the Tonight program item which discussed the mortgage exit fee refund subject, I contacted my previous mortgage provider the C&G.
I had re-mortgaged twice, the second being to a different provider, and the exit fee I paid to the C&G was as agreed £225. No refund due.
However, the first time I re-mortgaged was effectively from a joint C&G mortgage to a C&G mortgage for myself on the same property. I am now due a £144.65 refund as a result of the raised exit charge (to join the same company!) I had no paperwork for the original re-mortgage and required the C&G to re-trace their records from 2003. The whole process took 5 minutes to complete.

Update following my earlier post on 8 Aug 07:
I obtained my second re-mortgage paperwork from the C&G and I actually had been over-charged despite being told otherwise by the C&G. I am now due another re-fund of £50 as a result of this "oversight".
The correspondence that I eventually got from the C&G was not addressed properley, so I complained again, in writing, and said that the level of service was poor and that they had not been entirley honest with regard my refunds. They are giving me another £20 as way of compensation.
Bottom line is, check the original paperwork and don't accept what your provider tells you over the phone with regards exit fee refunds. They do get it wrong.
I am now £215 better of as a result of the advice in this forum..spread the word to your friends.

Thank you very much for sending out regular e-mails they've been of great benefit!! Recently, I reclaimed my Mortgage Exit fee from the Halifax. I made a simple phone call and within two weeks I had a cheque for £110! Fantastic result! Keep up the good work....you are our "champion"! For those of you thinking of claiming back monies...just do it. Even if you have to write a letter. If it takes you 10 minutes to draft and send...its well worth it. The way I see it, do I earn £110 per 5 - 10 minutes....and the answer is definitely NO! So if it takes 5 or 10 minutes out of my day then its well worth pursuing it. :T0 -
We remortgaged with C&G in 2005, they charged £225 'admin fee' for the privilage, I disputed the charge at the time but got nowhere.
I saw Martin on TV talking about the exit fees, came to the site, followed the advice and rang C&G.....I got £253 back as my original mortgage agreement had nil fees!

i have changed mortgages 3 times in the last 10 years, so was able to contact 3 ex providers to see how they compared. The contrast was amazing and results so far very different, but did reflect the customer service I did receive from them as a customer.
Halifax, dead simple rang the number gave them my account number from 2000, had the account for 3 years, they verified the information and confirmed the amount i was due and will send a cheque.
Abbey, despite the records being newer, the account closed in 2002, the records had been archived and they would need to unarchive, but they would send me in a form to complete and send back.
Coventry, oh dear, rang the customer service number to be told, yes told, you have to write in, when I challenged this they were not happy. eventually spoke to a manager, who said that this could be progressed from a telephone call and that they would investigate and acknowledge in 5 working days, the FSA say that a complaint must be acknowledged in 5 working days. So if you are thinking of contacting Coventry, be aware they may try to fob you off by telling you to write in. don't accept this!!!!0 -
I never have any luck with receiving money for any of these things. I tried my council tax with no avail. I wondered whether it was worth doing this. I thought for the sake of 2 postage stamps I'd give it a whirl.
I sent letters off to the Nationwide and Natwest. Nationwide wrote me a letter to say you have not been overcharged and then Natwest rang up to say they owed us £140. Within a day it was in our bank account.
Wahoo! Wasn't that worth a postage stamp.
Try your luck you never know what you will receive back! From start to finish it took about a month.

I've just got off the phone with The Mortgage Business (TMB) with a grin on my face.
I had to give my mortgage roll number, when I started the mortgage (roughly) and when I redeemed it (again, roughly).
A very nice girl, then tapped away on her keyboard, and said that we are due a refund of £75, which she would action straight away, and we should have a cheque in around 10 days time!
Woo hoo - chuffed to bits with this. Hope I'm not premature in posting a success story - maybe I should have waited until the cheque arrives!
I also called NatWest (RBS) but because our mortgage with them was redeemed in 2001, we are not entitled as this only applies to mortgages redeemed after 2004. So anyone who's redeemed before this date isn't eligible as the charges were as quoted at that time (that makes sense in my head, but now I've seen it written down, I'm not sure it still does!)
ETA - £75 cheque arrived today, 7th September. Very nice thank you0
