Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

  • I contacted Bank Of Ireland regarding our mortgage which when we started with them in 2002 the release fee was £145. When we left in 2005 it was £195. They have agreed to refund us the £50 difference although they tried to imply that this was a gesture of good will. Whatever makes them feel better. If you want to reclaim from them you need to write to them. Bank Of Ireland, Plaza West, Bridge Street, Reading, RG1 2LZ quoting your mortgage number.
  • This is so easy!
I only had my account number and basic details but I phoned Abbey and they sent me a form to fill in a couple of weeks ago, which I sent straight back and I have just received a cheque for £175!!
    Thank you so much!!
  • Hi, I wondered if anyone could advise me on the following:-:confused:confused:

I used the initial template letter to try to reclaim our mortgage exit fee overpayment and posted it on 2/8/07 to Abbey Plc and have not received a reply as of 25/8/07 even allowiing for the postal strikes. Should I write again using the stronger template letter or just wait a bit longer first? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Margaherita,

Just phone Abbey as they need you to fill in a form anyway and they are very helpful.

Had to write to two different companies as we change our mortgage every 2 years

Alliance & Leicester sent me a cheque today for £120
still waiting to hear from Abbey National - we have been with the Abbey twice in the last 7 years so hopefully we will be getting 2 cheques (or is that just being greedy);)

  • We switched mortgages in April 2004 and Bradford & Bingley charged us a sealing fee of £140. After a telephone call to them they advise they have set up a special customer relations team to deal with these claims and the template letter has now been sent claiming a refund. The new mortgage was with The One Account(RBS) and due to early retirement we paid this off early but maintained the account open with a Nil balance because they wanted a £225 administration charge to fully redeem and return the deeds. After a telephone call to them referring to the article they have agreed to waive any fee close the account and return the deeds.
  • Can anybody give me some advice please.

We took out our mortgage with northern rock in 2005 the stated meaf was £250 (being first time buyers we didnt know if this was good or bad no excuse i know) we moved to stroud and swindon in may this year and sure enough Northern Rock charged us £250.

I sent them a letter stating the charge and i thought it was unfair..... they sent me a letter back saying that we knew that the charge was there and they are happy that we are not entitled to a refund.

Can i continue to challenge it? what makes me even more angry is that they now dont even charge a Fee..... surely this is unfair and entitles me to something back?

Look forward to some replies...... thanks :)

not sure if this will help but my letter from the Alliance & Leicester says
the admin fee was introduced in Jan 2004 then increased in Aug 2004 however they have decided to reduce the fee payable by customers who took out their mortgage before Aug 2004 to the original level ....therefore i would suggest you give it a try saying along the lines 'you no longer charge a fee' and see what they say - hope that helps

  • After watching you on GMTV, I read your article and contacted 4 mortgage companies. A few phone calls later, 3 out of 4 have paid up to a total tune of £414!!!!
    Thank you so much :j
