Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

  • Just by chance of hearing Martin on GMTV this morning I just got £140 back from Natwest. I closed the mortgage 2.5 years ago and at the time was annoyed by the £225 exit charge. I just called Natwest and gave them my details (always worth saving old paperwork for a few years) and was told that I had been overcharged by £140 and would get the money transferred to my account (no longer with Natwest btw) by EOB next Wednesday. Result!! Many thanks to Martin and the team.
  • I changed my mortgage a year and a half ago and didn't give it a thought. First time on this site, had a read of the succes stories and helpful info, phoned the halifax dedicated number and a chq for £100 is hopefully winging its way to me!! All in about 20 minutes. Happy days! Thank you!!
  • Yippee - what took me so long ... I just called the Halifax and not only got myself £135 reimbursement for mortgage exit fees, but also a phone number to find out about employment on their help line! Bargain phone call. Moneyspinner Housewife

Is there a time limit on how far you can go back?

My first mortgage was with Leeds & Holbeck some 20 years ago and I'm sure they have been bought out by someone else.

    Is this worth pursuing?
  • Have had Mortgage Repayment Fee enquiry form from Abbey to complete. Paid exit fee in 2005 of £225. The mortgage taken out in 1997 was in joint names and we are now divorced. Abbey's form states on it that the cheque refund will be made payable to all borrowers on the mortgage account. Spoke to Abbey customer services about this and was told I would have to get my ex to sign the form and have the money paid into 1 account. I have no contact with my ex husband. I only wish to have my half refunded. Can Abbey by law hang on to my half just because I am divorced.
Anybody else in this situation? Any info greatly received.

    Frustrated

Lawfully probably 6 years, but many lenders are ignoring the limit
  • Wrote 2 complaint letters in 2004 requesting a refund on increased mortgage redemption fee but with no success.

A quick phone call today to the dedicated number on this site and I am now due to receive a refund with interest in the next few days.

I am v. pleased. Thank you!
  • Saw Martin on GMTV this morning & thought I'd give it a go. The info on this site was really helpful. Spent 25 mins digging out old NatWest redemption statement from Feb 06 to find a 'sealing fee' of £225.

Phoned the number shown on this site & within 3 mins & no hassle, they agreed that the original fee had been £85 in Aug 2001 so would put £140 back into my account within 10 days via BACS.

As I used to work for NatWest, I was expecting to have to fight for the money, but not the case this time! I've spread the word to friends & family for them to do the same.

    Result! Thanks Martin :j
