I called Natwest last week to ask for the difference between the exit fee I had paid and what I was advised in their leaflet when I took the mortgage out in early 2004. I was told that as I had a further advance and then switched everything to a new product early 2005 that the new fee applied & was not entitled to a refund. I politely stated I was not happy with this as at no point during the telephone discussions was this increased exit fee mentioned nor was a new charges leaflet attached in the pack I subsequently received (which I still hold & had trawled through at the time of exit last year & prior to calling!) therefore in the absence of anything to the contrary the original fee should stand. I was told this would be forwarded to the complaints team to investigate. to make sure I followed it up the same day with a letter stating all the facts as well.

I had a message left for me 2 days ago from Natwest to say they were refunding me the difference of £ 140.00:j so definately worth pursuing.

This is even more satisfying as I had called to query the fee at the time I got my mortgate redemption statement last year and was told that was the current cost & basically that was that. I didn't think it was right then but got no where, but thanks to this site and the ruling in Feb I tried again. Thanks :money:- keep up the good work.
    Can't resist a bargain!!

I sent letters to Nationwide and Northern Rock a week ago. Receieved a cheque from Nationwide for £90 and Northern Rock replied and will be sending me a cheque for £25.
I didn't have all the mortgage account numbers and info but gave them as much as I could, no problems.
    Very happy with the result!
  • Contacted Alliance And Leicester about my mortgage charge.

I took out a mortgage in 2001 and changed to Britannia in 2005.

They sent me a cheque for £220 yesterday for the difference in the fees between these dates.

I used the template letter supplied on the site.

Thanks Martin, another great success of the consumer.
  • Hello, thought I would give the MEAF reclaim a go as I remortgaged 3 times in the last 6 years, i downloaded the template letter and sent it off to Bristol & West (exit 2003) and Abbey (exit 2005) and within 1 week I have received a letter back from Bristol & West saying that they are offering me £50 back, just needed to sign a disclaimer saying I would not pursue my claim further and they will send me a cheque. Abbey sent a form to fill in and want a copy of my mortgage offer which I am sending today. The last exit fee was with the Halifax in June 2007 and I rang the number for the customer help line and was very quickly dealt with by an apologetic women who told me that I had paid the correct fee and was not due a refund.

Give it a go it really works!!
  • Just 'phoned the Halifax after re-mortgaging last year: £100 back for a five minute call! Result! Thanks to Martin and MSE, the best finance site on the Web.
  • Just got form to get £125 back from Northern Rock. Thanks Martin
Also bt Dell computer on your recommendation. Your the best money site. Hazel Rabbit
  • Maled my letter to Nationwide last Friday.

    £90 cheque on doormat yesterday!

Accompanying letter explained how it wasn't really their policy to refund, but due to the fact that they had never told us about the charge, they refunded.
    Off to bank it now.
    xx
