Got a cheque for £210 from Alliance & Leicester on it's way to me. No arguments, cheque processed the same day they dealt with my letter! :rotfl:
(First cheque went missing as they sent to my old address before I emigrated while they were dealing, but hardly their fault, and they're now doing a BACS transfer, so still very happy with the outcome)- Jeff K -0 -
Halifax have just refunded my £35 for a mortgage I paid back in 2001.
I also had a mortgage with Natwest, which I paid back in 2004, however, they told me there was no refund due as I had only paid the £85 fee originally quoted.
I didn't have any mortgage or account details for either of these. I just phoned them and gave them my name and address.0 -
Hi folks
GMTV is doing a special show on reclaiming mortgage exit fees and would like a couple to come onto the sofa who’ve done it successfully. They will be needed for tomorrow morning's show.
If you’d like to inspire others to get their cash back too please PM me with your name, how much you got back and a contact number.
Thanks0 -
Just a quick note to say thank you for your info on Mortgage exit fees. I wrote to Skipton Building Society on the 23rd July requesting a refund and received a cheque for £65.00 this morning (1st August)

REFUNDED 139.81 AND IT TOOK A THREE MINUTE CALL !!!
I read the article and thought I should see if I was entitled to a refund. I had a morgage with the Woowhich Building Society (now Barclays) for over 10 years. I left them for a different building society about two years ago.
I didn't bother to find all my paperwork detailing how much I paid all that time ago and I wasn't even sure what they Charged me to exit my mortgage.
I phoned the claims line (number on this site) and they took me through security, and without me really saying anything they told me what they should have charged, what they actually charged and said I was entitled to a refund of around 130.00 + 9.81 interest.
They took my bank details and sort code and paid the money into my account whilst I was on the phone. (this was Monday 30 July) and by today (1st August) the money has cleared into my account !!!
Call durration took under 5 minutes!!
Well pleased - thanks MSE !!

That was Natwest's original fee before any increases, so that would be appropriate.Scott0 -
Thanks Martin 3 x banks have agreed to refund the overcharge, one as much as £220 - A & L!!. However, what do you do if the cheque is made out to joint names on the mortgage as it was at the time and you have since seperated? One bank were very understanding and agreed I can return the cheque and they will make it out to one person - the other Abbey - what idiots- they are giving me the added grief of getting permission from the other party on the old mortgage before or they will send us half each? What idiots! I said what do I do if they are dead? no answer what do I do if they refuse? no answer - I suppose I have to cross that bridge when I get there. Any advice, can I insist on them sending payment to one of the account holders? After all, the mortagage payments came from me only, they didn't receive 2 separate payments each month?? deeeerrrrrr? lol One member said they received a CHAPS payment, why can't Abbey do that? Out of all the lenders I have used, they have proved to be the most difficult- any advice please?? Thanks:o:mad:0

Of course you can't insist on it being paid to you without your former OH's permission. That would represent you stealing from your former OH.
The best you can expect is to get paid half of the money in your own name.
No way did someone else get paid by CHAPS. They mean BACS. But most lenders are paying by cheque.0 -
Thank u for your response - it's a bit of a kick as th OH never paid a penny and our divorce settlement didn't give them half the house either so it seems a bit crazy - especially as one bank are prepared to do it - how can you steal what you jointly share? never mind I am still grateful0

Hi sent a template to Nationwide for MEAF just over a week ago as when I called ( freephone number not 0845 ) was told I needed to write in, still waiting, hopefully just the postal strike holding things up??? I don't have my original morgage details from 1991 hoping charge was nil at that time & I might get £90.
Also, why is it Nationwide advertise that they treat their present customers the same as new? when new morgage customers get a freephone number & existing ones get an 0845 number? Of course I rang the "new" customers number!!Comping again - wins so far : 2 V festival tix, 2 NFL tix, 6 bottles of wine, personalised hand soap, Aussie miracle conditioner
