We had no problem with Cheltenham & GLoucester...HOWEVER...we told a friend who had a mortgage with the Ipswich Building Society.

He received a really stroppy letter from them - saying that the fee quoted was £25....but they had charged him £75...and a cheque was enclosed for the £50. :rotfl:

Have now told him to write back asking for Interest! LOL!
  • Approached both C&G and RBS by phone. Both dealt with the matter very efficiently and politely. Both said would refund the overpayment (only about £100.00) and would send funds to my bank account or a cheque. Fantastic!!! And what a refreshing change that they seem to accept that they have been in the wrong and are actualy putting it right !!

We questioned the £50 previously under ...other debits....on statement sept 2006 and was told tuff! you dont get it back.....

so Advice.............We questioned the cost of the MEAF and asked the society to justify its costs. The societys response was a nice little cheque for us! So send your template letter today!!!
Thanks Martin for giving power to the people:T
  • Just to add my success to the pile!

Made two phonecalls last week, one to Halifax, one to Natwest. Phonecalls lasted about 2 minutes each, no hassle. Had £140 paid direct into bank account from Natwest, and cheque arrived yesterday for £125 from Halifax

    Thanks Martin :)

And by the way...the counter doesn't work!

I've already received £211 from mortgage companies with no questions asked! All I did was write to each lender (Halifax, Portman and The Woolwich) using a slightly modified MSE Template with my Mortgage Account number and hey presto, they all wrote back telling me the difference that they'd charged me and a cheque would be forthcoming. I'm currently awaiting a response from Birmingham Midshires for another 2 mortgage redemptions and will post their reply.

Received a cheque from the Abbey for £126 just over a week after putting a claim in

    Thank you to MSE :D

Although some people seem to be getting £170+ from the Abbey, should I try and claim more????

    Thanks

The amount that people are being refunded entirely depends on their own circumstances i.e when they opened and finished their mortgage.

Only you will know if your entitled to more by checking how much the MEAF was when you opened the mortgage and when you closed it.

  • Have just spoken to a very helpful lady at the Halifax, very easy to get through on their dedicated line and although they initially asked for the roll number, start date and redemption date I only needed my roll number (although she offered to find it for me if I hadn't had it!!). We took the mortgage out in 2002 and ended it in 2005 - and I will receive £100 within 28 days. Brilliant, many thanks for the tip!

  • Just wanted to share with everyone that all i had to do to get my exit fees back was ring the dedicated telephone number with the halifax to re claim your fees...i was the quicked £150 i have ever made.
Rang to see if i could get them back, didn't have my mortgage account number so they found it on my current account info. the advisor said that i was eligable and i would have a letter sent with the outcome within 10 days. 3 days after making that call i had a cheque in the post for £150.
What can i say apart from thank you to martins money tips for informing me that i was entitled to MY money back.
Hot sure what other lenders are like, but if you have had a mortgage with the halifax then ring them NOW!!!
    Good luck
