Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

The other day my husband told me about this fantastic web site he had heard about on radio2. Thought I would have a look as i love saving money! Browsed through the forum and saw the section on mortgages. The section on reclaiming fees caught my eye. All the stories inspired me to give the halifax a ring and see if we were due any money back. It was so easy, rang Halifax and was put through to a very polite lady who asked for my mortgage roll no. Asked how long we had had the mortgage for, and that was basically it. Checked our files and said they owed us £115. Just like that, no hassle, no other questions. Fantastic I am now awaiting my cheque to take my daughter on a shopping spree. :j Anybody who is hesitant to ring, do it, it is the most money I have ever earnt in 2 minutes.0

i rang the halifax on their dedicated hotline regarding these fees, as soon as i mentioned that i didnt have my old mortgage roll number he said there wasnt any way of tracing the details, i told him that i found that hard to believe as im still a customer of theirs(unfortunately) and that i paid the mortgage off with the insurance payment on my husbands death, he then told me that when a mortgage holder dies the fees are waived but im almost certain that i was charged fees for early mortgage settlement and deeds release, is anyone else aware of this? and as i have had a second failed attempt to get any further ny telephone does anyone know the halifax,s address to write to regarding this matter? thank you in advance.0

I phoned up the number on this site for Halifax (as now Bank of Scotland is part of HBOS) about what I paid when I finished my BOS mortgage with them 4.5 yrs ago. I was told on the phone that BOS did not charge Mortgage Exit Fees at this point and that they would send me a letter confirming this and that I would get no money back. Fair enough I thought... it was worth a try!
Strange thing is that it appears a letter for me was sent to my parents address (my address when I closed that mortgage) with a cheque for £50 in it. I haven't seen the letter yet but it is apparently not for the Mortgage exit fee but for something else end of mortgage related that was not mentioned in my origional documents so they are refunding it! :T I'm confused but happy!! :j I still have an account with HBOS so they have my current address so god knows why they sent it tha former address. The £50 will come in handy thought! :j

I took my dispute with Northern Rock to the Ombudsman and yesterday received a letter from NR saying that they did not want to be in dispute with their customers so they're refunding me the £250 exit fee they charged me.

Just for information really, in case someone searches this thread for Intelligent finance.
I Phoned them, and was dismissed. I wrote to them using the MSE template, and was told no because I had agreed to the £140 charge. I wrote again, saying please breakdown the charge to I can go to the FSA, they have just offered a refund of £140.
Thanks MSE!

Simply the easiest £135 for sending a letter. I didnt even know if I had a mortgage exit fee charge but in the subsequent reply the charge was £215 with a detailed breakdown and a cheque posted out a few days later for £135!
Thanks MSE! :T  :j
Now to reclaim from those Banks!0 -
Thanks to 'Martin's Money Tips' I received a refund of £180 plus interest from the Woolwich. It just took one quick 'phone call and the money was credited to my account the next day. Tell all your friends - there must be loads of people out there who are eligible to claim and the banks aren't going to offer it to you.0
