How much were the MEAFs when you took out this mortgage (you can only claim the difference if you were charged more than this)

not sure where will i find out this information?

  • Just to let everyone know
Paid off mortgage early, got charged £225 exit fee as standard for Lloyds bank. Didn't even need to send of the template letter as phone call to Lloyds mortgage HQ at Scunthorpe brought an immediate response of a refund of all the charge PLUS INTEREST of 6%. Wowee!
    Cheers again Martin.

Claimed mortgage discharge fee of £250. They wrote back quickly stating that it should have been £160 and offered £90. I was sure I could press for more, but for the sake of one easy letter (used Martin Lewis' template off here) and a 1st class stamp am happy to take a quick £90!

    TY MSE again!!!
Halifax WON! Claimed £1549 on 8th Jan 2007, Settled for £1350 on 29th Jan, Paid 7th Feb.
MBNA (Virgin / Alliance Credit Card charges): WON! Claimed £419 on 17 March, finally offered £425! on 5 June)
Natwest Credit Card: WON! Claimed £250, got 100% + interest + court costs too.
Northern Rock: Mortgage Discharge Fee: WON! Claimed £100. Offered £90 and accepted it.
Natwest Bank / RBS: WON! Claimed £400. Got 100% + interest + court fees back.

    Thank you!!!!
I phoned C&G , they told me they would investigate. The very next day I received a letter saying I had been overcharged and they would refund the amount plus interest, they would be sending me £188! The following day I got my cheque!
Absolutely brilliant, thanks for this advice. It appears to me all the mortgage providers know they are in the wrong ( hence the quick response) but unless you claim they are keeping quiet!

  • :T Thanks Martin. After reading info on your site I wrote to the Coventry Building Society and requested £100 refund as they had charged £195 redemption fees in 2005, instead of the £95 they originally stated when we took the mortgage out in 2000. Today I received a cheque from them for £100 - although they refused to pay any interest on that amount.

What can we do about arrangement fees - another rip off of Joe Public?
  • Hello, I'm new to the site but was aware of exit fees fair policy because of hearing about it on TV from you Martin. I exited a 2 year deal with l & h 2005, re-looked at paperwork. Charged £195 to exit, l & h advised £65 at start of the mortgage, I sent a letter recorded delivery 14 june received reply 20 june with cheque for £130 under fair fees policy they agreed to abide by. Thanks & chuffed! :j

I telephoned the Halifax dedicated line to claim my refund. Having redeemed my mortgage in 2003 and not having any records to hand, I was informed that I had not been charged any redemption fee because I had held the mortgage for ten years.

    Is that true?
I asked for written confirmation and was told I would have to write in.

Worth a letter to make absolutely sure? Should I ask for a copy of my closing statement or will they charge me a tenner for that?
  • I took out a mortgage with Bank Of Ireland Mortgages back in 1992 and the MEAF quoted in the deed was £90. On repayment in 2004 I was charged £145, so on the face of it I should have a claim for £55. However my bank have just replied to my letter and refused to pay anything. Their argument is that over the years I've changed mortgage products and each time signed a variation to the mortgage deed, and that any claim relates to the situation when the last one was signed not the initial mortgage deed. The last variation was in 2002 and at that time the MEAF was £145.
I haven't got copies of the variations to hand but, if my memory serves me correctly they were one page documents that contained not a lot more than details of the t&c's that applied to the new product and most certainly did not specify an increase in the MEAF. Apparently the practice of basing any refund on the fee in force at the last variation has been agreed with the FSA.
Has anyone come across this before?
