Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

I received a cheque back from Abbey after sending the standard letter to reclaim back the fees a few weeks ago. They did initially send another letter asking me to sign to say what I wanted back (a delaying tactic, i believe) but the cheque came fairly quickly in the end for the full amount they over charged me.

I made one phone call, really polite man said they owed me £75- I received this by cheque within 10 days. Also £10 from Abbey, but had to fill out a form for this so took a a while longer.:j:j0

After reading the article a week ago, I immediately phoned the dedicated helpline. No hassle whatsoever. The pleasant guy on the line checked a few facts and announced simply that my mortgage had no exit fee when I took it out, I would receive the full £175 fee back. Today, the cheque arrived. Therefore it is obviously worth asking what the fee was when you first took out your mortgage. There was a Deeds Release fee of £50 pounds in addition to the fee I was charged, making a total of £225. The Halifax says this £50 is not returnable and as Martin explained, generally the admin related to mortgage closure might reasonably amount to £50 anyway.
Has anyone retrieved the Deeds Release fee as well as the MEAF?0 -
Just phoned up the Woolwich/Barclays reclaim phone no. posted by Martin gave the mortgage account no., name & address & within seconds the assistant told me I was overcharged by £180 + £7.37 interest & how would I like it to be paid. A 2 minute free phone call from start to finish!
Thanks to MSE I'm £187.37 better off
Cheers Madcow
Just a quick update - 24 hours later the £187 was sitting in my bank account !0 -
Hi,
I would love to know if anyone has had a successful MEAF rebate from the Principality Building Society.
Thanks

We had the same letter! After having success with both Natwest and YBS. I have wrote back to them using one of Martin's letters showing the difference in the initial MEAF and what we paid and asked them to justify their costs. That was a week ago and yet to get a response, although I did request a response in 14 days. See if that get me anywhere, it's only £40 but it's the principle!
Did u get any success with Principality.
Kind Rgds

Very easy phonecall. Apparently Halifax increased the charge from £40 (Jan 1993) to £75 (Jan 2001) so they are sending me a cheque for £35.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Hi,
Just a note to report how easy it is to get cash from the Bristol and West building society. When I switched mortgages roughly 5 years ago I was charged a total of £245 in fees. I spent 5 minutes to send them an e mail and they wrote back and offered me £145 refund which I have accepted. The cheque arrived yesterday. Many thanks Martin. So for the time it took to contact the building society it is well worth it.
