Many thanks ! I down loaded your letter as I had paid £225 Mortgage Exit Fee last September. I had originally agreed a sum of £30 MEF. many years ago but could not find the paperwork to back this up. The letter was sent on a Wednesday and I recieved a reply on the following Monday stating a cheque for £204 would follow. The cheque arrived on the following Wednesday with a letter of apology!
I am highly delighted but wonder; if I had not written would the building society mave pocketed my money and kept quiet?
Thankyou once again. I am spreading the word.:T0 -
After reading about this i sent the standard template letter to northern rock. To be honest i didn't know what we were quoted as the MEF or what we charged so didn't hold out much hope however i sent the letter and less than a week letter i recieved a letter saying i was owed £90. Sent it straight back in the post agreeing!!!!! To top it off i have also got my boyf's £460 bank charges back. Thanks martin, i am spreading the word because without you we would all be one hell of a lot worse off!!!!!0

Bank:Northern Rock
Date Claimed: June 2007
Amount Claimed: £255 (full fee plus interest)
Amount Settled: £195 (full fee without interest)
Hello All
Just want to report that on Saturday, after 3 letters to Northern Rock (all in June), they have settled and refunded the full fee (less interest) that I originally paid back in 2003. I held a mortgage with them from 1998 to 2003.
This discussion area on MoneySavingExpert helped me enormously as I found someone with almost matching cirumstances who had been sucessful and followed suit. I eventually suceeded myself by just insisting that they breakdown the cost of the fee or refund the full amount paid. I told them that it would be considered unfair under contract law (Unfair Terms in Contract) and quoted FSA statment re these fees. Proportionality is a big factor as they should only be charging administration costs.
Good luck to everyone.
To date I have claimed the following back for mortgage exit/discharge fees:
Standard Life: £35
Birmingham Midshire: £55
Northern Rock: £195
I am also claiming coop bank bank charges and will post my success when that happens - I'm in no doubt that it will.0 -
Just got letter from C&G saying that they owe me £195. Initial fee was supposed to be £50, but they charged £225, so got difference plus interest!!
Cheers all ( an C&G :P )

Just got £106 back from the Portman.
Thanks MSE.
Does anyone remember which lender used the multicoloured umberella in their ads?0 -
I phoned the Barclays/Woolwich number that you had given, a few minutes later I had been refunded £195 plus interest! Thank you again. :T0

Followed advice for reclaiming mortgage exit fees - rang Cheltenham and Gloucester, said 'Hello, I am ringing to reclaim my mortgage exit fees'. Gave my account number (swapped from C&G last year to Halifax) and was quoted over phone. I mentioned interest and they said they'd add that. Got letter today saying cheque on its way for £132!
Thank you!
Am going to use some of it to pay for a friend for a short break (she has cancer).....

Just to let you know that I asked for the difference between the original exit admin fee and what I was charged, resulting in £25 back from Northern Rock, and £95 from Bristol & West. Not bad for one phone call and two letters.
Thanks Martin!!!:T0 -
I took out a mortgage with Northern Rock in 1992 and the MEAF was then £50. I redeemed the mortgage in 2004 and paid a massive £195 MEAF. So, on 8 March I sent them a polite letter along the lines of the template, requesting the refund of my £145 and on 31 March I received their cheque for £145!No reliance should be placed on the above.0
