Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Hi
After seeing the GMTV item, I looked into 2 mortgages that I'd redeemed in the last 5 years.
Although I didnt have the details of the original fee quoted, I suspect they were both less than I paid on redemption.
So rang the Halifax on the dedicated number - less than 5 minutes on the phone and I'm due a £100 refund!!! Fantastic. They said they'd pay by cheque within 28 days.... so lets see.
Have written to the Abbey National regarding that mortgage which was less recent, but will wait and see how long they take to look into it.
Cant thank you enough Martin!!0 -
We recently remortgaged from One Account in January. I decided to ring them this morning and ask whether we were entitiled to a mortgage exit refund, even though I wasn't sure if we were. Within two minutes a very helpful lady told me we were entitled to £150 refund because theyhad initially stated it was £75 for exiting, and they charged us £225. It was so easy. If in doubt ring. This has made my day. THANKS MARTIN.:T0

For the first time ever in my many years of dealing with banks it is a pleasure to report a pain free transaction.
After reading the mortgage fee overcharging article I rang the telephone number given on the web page for the Barclays/Wollwich and was answered by an employee who actually sounded happy to be doing the job and was then led through a simple listen and answer question session relating to the mortgage account details and personal details at the end of which I was told exactly the amount I had been charged on exiting my mortgage, how much I had been overcharged, how much interest I was entitled to and then after giving some bank account details was told that the overcharged money plus interest would be in my bank account in approximately 5 working days.
Absolutely wonderful, well done Martin

I'm not usually at home to watch LK Today but watched it last week and have just followed your advice on how to claim mortgage exit fees. Wow, by tuning in that day I am now expecting 2 cheques total value approx. £130
I had a mortgage with Nottingham Building Soc. which was redeemed in 2005. On ringing today I was told to write to their redemptions dept. at head office and would receive min. £70. All I had was the account number as I had lost/mislaid all paperwork.
The second mortgage was with Halifax. I had all paperwork for this but only needed the account number. I was promised a cheque for £60 within 28 days.
I have passed on your advice to several friends and family. They are all in the process of chasing their building societies for refunds.
Thank you so much Martin. I have signed up for your money saving tips emails. You are a star.0 -
Just phoned Barclays and they were a pleasure to deal with.
One call £112 to be put in my bank account - Hurrah!!
Bristol and West are proving slightly more difficult as you need to write - What a pain! Nevermind, I'm doing it as if they owe us money that buys a lot of ice cream when we go on holiday;-P
Fantasic - Thanks Martin xx

The Abbey tried to charge me £225, I rummaged through my old paperwork and found that it should have been £95. I called them and they apologised saying that the computer automatically puts £225!
The new mortgage co have a ‘clause’ it now says it will be £xxxx (currently, liable to change) also, I’ve got to pay my new mortgage co. £25 for NOT using their buildings insurance! If you’re not stung one way they get you another!0 -
Just got £100 back from Halifax :money: the fee was apparently £175 so they're not refunding the whole amount only the amount they overcharged _ £100 (?) but that's good enough for me!! Great tip :beer:0

I have today rang my old bank ( Mortgage Trust) to claim my exit fee, as I switched my mortgage in Dec '06. To be told that because I didn't have a regulated mortgage, I can't claim??? Can anyone explain this to me??0

Hi all,
called the Halifax on the toll free number 08451 203033. The chap on the phone was very friendly and helpful. I only had my previous address for background but he was able to pull up all my details. The mortgage closed in 2002 which was before the big jumps in fees, but never-the-less, I am getting a refund of 35 quid; this is down to Martin's web page/mails.Forgot to mention that it was all done on the phone...no forms to fill in.
Thank you0
