Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Hi people,
About 10 days ago I sent the template letter to Abbey as the exit fee rose from £99 to £225 from April 2004 to the time we closed our account in August 2006. They sent a form within 3 days which I returned straight away, and yesterday we got a cheque for £126.
Well done Martin, and well done Abbey for being so responsive. I hope more people do this as it is easy to do and it is your money these companies are sitting on.
Thanks!:TMonty & SJ0 -
Martin,
You are a star. We mortgaged with Northern Rock in August 1997 and left them in March 2002. At that time I quibbled and wrote to them about the increase in exit fees to no avail. Sent a letter last Saturday using the template and Hey Presto their letter, received today, says they will now be refunding the £60 overcharge!
Shame it isn't plus interest!! ... but then we can't have it all.
Thanks
prewch
What were the fees for Northern Rock , i can't seems to find paperwork, but i do know we were with the from 1997-2003 . thanks0 -

thanks to this website I have had a full refund of charges applied by Standard Life when we moved home and mortgage in April 2005.
After coming across this topic I went home and although I could not find our original contract with Standard Life for our mortgage taken out in April 2001 I did have a list of fees we had been charged when we moved last year.
Using Martin template I wrote off to them asking for the fee back saying it was not on the original paperwork (even though I could not be sure) and I got a cheque in 3 days later with a chq for £200.00 (the full amount charged).
I couldn't believe it!

Just to let you know I read your artical about fees.
We took out our mortgage with the C&G in oct 1982 I have made small over payments over the years .In jan this year my mortgage ballance was around £10 but was told I had 8 months to go and I had to pay £225.00 which I did because I paid it off early.I contacted the C&G like you said last week and today I had a letter from them and it say's closing fee of £5.00 so they are going to send me a cheque for £223.80 which includes £3.80 interest
THANK YOU SO MUCH
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Why aren't they paying you £125 plus interest?0 -
This morning I sucessfully got a payment of £50.15 from the Woolwich. I took the mortgage out in 2000 and redeemed late 2003 and was charged £195 exit fee. Although the table on the article states the fee should have been around £95 5 years ago the bloke on the phone told me mine was £150 so he's offering (£195 - £150) = £45 plus interest @ 4% totalling £51.15.
I'm going to try and dig out my original contract to see if it was indeed £95 originally (unless anyone else can confirm this for me?) and give them a call back but £51.15 for a two minute phonecall is brilliant but I'd like to make sure they've not tried to fob me off when really i should be entitle to £195-50 plus interest.
I bet the banks hate Martin!if i had known then what i know now0 -
Took your advice and telephoned the Woolwich I have just got back nearly £200
However my sister tried with Halifax and was told her mortgage was a buy to let and it does not apply?
Is this correct??0
