  • I have just contacted Barclays who confirmed that they charged me a fee of £150 at the time I switched Mortgages. They stated that until the FSA rule what is a fair price I will not be getting anything "at this time".
I was advised to watch out for any change in the future then contact them again.
Sounds like Barclays are not going to give up without a fight.

This is not an MEAF. This is a mortgage product fee/switch fee which is outside the scope of the FSA ruling.

Lenders can charge you anything they like as an up-front fee for a mortgage product AND for switching between mortgage products. If you choose to take the product, or make the switch, you have to pay whatever they ask.

As I stated in the other thread, I was charged both a product fee and a switching fee by A&L in 2005 amounting to £745 - to stay with the same lender, surely I would be able to claim some of this back...

I have spoken to Abbey as the MEAF has gone up from £99 to £225 and they say that as it says on the KeyFacts document the amount is subject to change, they don't have to refund the difference. Is this correct?
  • hi
just thought id let you no watched you on lk yesterday, reclaim morgage, how easy it was, i already had morgage number on internet banking, checked your overpayment chart, rang the number you supplied for natwest, but it was actually bank of scotland, nat west number is 01216351060 they were extremly apologetic saying it would be in my bank within ten days, £150 my freezer just broke so it only going to cost a few pounds extra for a new one i'm overjoyed. Could you recommend a bank that will let you open account without having to put a minimum £1000, my son is out of work at the moment in the process of getting a job, he has been hit over the years with loads of charges for overdraft etc from Nat West and we want to reclaim these, but want to open a new account with a different bank prior to putting in claim in case they close his account, but finding it difficult to open account whilst he is un employed.

Doesn't sound right to me - I would suggest sending one of the letter templates in Martin's article, you may have more success in writing.

Charged £295 for exiting mortgage with Alliance & Leicester in Sept 2005. Original documentation quoted £85. Telephoned A & L and obtained a refund cheque for £210 within 3 weeks. Excellent result and no paperwork!
    Thanks Martin.:j
  • Thank you Martin, I have just phoned the telephone number for the Halifax mortgage final payment fee refund and I have been awarded £95 it only took minutes as the agreed amount in 1988 was £20. Once again thank you Martin and best wishes to everybody else.
  • Hi,
I contacted C&G using the tel no from the web site. It only took one phone call to claim bck the over charge fee of £62 plus interest. This was from a change of mtge from july 03. Not large amount of money but better in my account rather than theirs. BL
  • Dear Martin

My wife saw your GM TV article and told me about it, so we looked up the guide to find the number of our previous mortgage provide - Woolwich .

Today at 16:45 I called the the 0800 number provided, even though I didn't have the previopus mortgage account number I have taken swiftly through the security process e.g. DOb address etc. I was immediately informed that I had been charged 195.00 and that I was due a refund of 100.00 + 6 pounds interest. (4% at 1.5 years) . I accepted this and am extremely pleased ; the whole process took less than 2 minutes . Thank you so much!

Also well done Woolwich - Barclays for such a well managed help line ; so
good in these days of options on switchboards and waiting for an operator to respond ! Welll done !! :T :A ::j
