  • We moved our mortage from Cheltenham & Glos in 2003 & were only charged £100 but thought it was worth a try. Now getting £79 back (which includes interest) not a huge amount but worth the 10 minutes it took by phone!
  • We moved our mortgage from Nationwide back in January 2006 and were charged a £90 exit fee, but when we took out the mortgage back in April 2000there wasn't any mention of any exit fees to pay.I wrote a letter to them using one of the templates on here.Within a couple of days i got a cheque for £90.Thanks!
  • I took out my mortgage with Abbey in 1990. I paid it all off in November 2006 and was charged a £225 repayment fee (even though I was not taking my business elsewhere). I queried the charge and received a cheque for £170 which according to Abbey represented the difference between £225 and the charge which was prevalent in 1990, i.e £55.

I had retained all my original paperwork, and nowhere in the standard conditions, special conditions or mortgage offer could I find any mention of a fee, never mind a figure of any sort, or that I had agreed to pay it. So I asked Abbey to provide evidence to support their inference that a fee of £55 prevailed in 1990, together with evidence (i.e. my signature) that I had agreed to pay it.

After a protracted delay and further correspondence, during which I initiated an action with the Financial Ombudsman, I received a reply from Abbey saying that they had not upheld my complaint - but enclosed a cheque for £55 anyway!

    I call that a victory!

I wouldn't be surprised if only the £75 and £50 are MEAFs in that case, and the £263.32 is actually penalty interest, particularly because of the non-round-sum amount. If it was First National was it a second charge mortgage, and was the amount not particularly large?

Hi there thanks to everyone who replied xx

By a second charge mortgage do you you mean that first national took over the mortgage company i was with? if so then yes i was originaly with HMC and was only for £38300

I have looked through all my paperwork and have found that they do charge 1 months notice on the amount redeemed in lieu of notice but it does say "if you redeem your loan early, we cover our administration costs by charging early redemption fees" which would be the £263.32

so do you think that the other £75 admin fee and £50 are justified as i cant find any mention of these two fees.
  • saw you on gmtv this morning................phoned up the halifax and within 2mins was dealt with and a chq for £125 is winging its way to me.

  • Just telephoned Halifax on the number posted on the website. Brilliant service. Took my mortgage out in 1993 exit fee quoted £40.00. Redeemed my mortgage in 2002 was charged £75.00. Halifax have agreed to to send me a cheque for the £35.00 difference in the next few days. Way to go Halifax!!!!!!

I just hope the letter I am sending to the Nationwide for the mortgage I redemeed in 2004 will get the same results!!!!! I will keep you updated!

I had a mortgage with my ex husband a few years back..... We remortgaged and sold up when we split in 2002..... I watched Martin (yummy!) on GMTV a while back, logged on to this site and decided to give it a go reclaiming the exit fees.....Wrote letter to C&G who replied rather promptly, expressing their excitement that they were pleased to tell me they were going to refund me all of £12.40!! whoopee!! I think not!!...... I replied basically saying 'please do not insult my intelligence' and demanded the full £192.00...... I am just waiting to hear back so fingers crossed!! .....I would give it a go at reclaiming bank charges as accumulated hundreds in the past few years but went bankcrupt in 2004 (was discharged the following June), so thought it would be pushing my luck claiming these too!!........Fab site by the way!!

Can you believe they actually sent the cheque back to me with my ex husbands name simply crossed off and no letter of explanation!! What should I do now?! Are they just fobbing me off?? Has anyone experienced the same problems with C & G??
