However my sister tried with Halifax and was told her mortgage was a buy to let and it does not apply?

    Is this correct??

Halifax doesn't offer Buy-to-let mortgages in the first place so don't know what's happened there

Why aren't they paying you £125 plus interest?
Depends on indiviual mortgage accounts - when opened, when redeemed
  • Thanks for the contact details, easiest £140 I have obtained. In February 2006 I redeemed my mortgage and had to pay a termination fee of £225. I phoned the Abbey number provided, gave them my account number and they sent me a form. Simple A4 form to complete my details of the mortgage account, address etc. Sent it back to them and within a couple of weeks they sent me a cheque for £140 - difference to the originally stated £85 from 5 years ago. No further questions asked nice and simple. Thanks again for the contacts and recommend others to acrt now.

Fantastic. I've just had a success with Cheltenham and Gloucester - second time of asking. First letter was ignored. I then used recorded delivery and got an immediate offer of £193.68. Delighted. Thank you for pointing it out.

This more than pays for the subscription to MSE (joke!).
  • I wrote to Bradford & Bingley on the 25th April and received a positive reply on the 27th april. They are to refund me £150 in total which is made up of £115 for a mortgage redeemed in 2003 and £35 from the previous one reedem in 1999. Thanks Martin I owe you a pint!!

I paid my mortgage off early, November 2006, paying over £200 for the priveledge (£275 I think), much more than the fee when I started the mortgage, but I did change to a daily interest product a few years a go.

Following presss coverage and MSE website I rang C&G to ask for a refund. A couple of weeks later I got a letter & a cheque for £229.85, a partial refund & interest 1% above bank rate. An easy result!

I remortgaged today with C&G from the Coventry. The Coventry sent me a statement saying the Mortgage Exit fee was £195. It was £95 when I took out the mortgage five years ago.

I called the Coventry and was told my further loan meant I had agreed to a rise in the exit fee as new Terms & Conds applied. I went through all my paperwork and could find nothing specific about a rise in exit fees.

I wrote to the Coventry stating this and that I understood the process cost, in reality, £50 so I would like a break down of their costs. Low and behold the fee is reduced from £195 to £95.

Don't fall at the first hurdle - keep on at them!!!!

I remortgage every two or three years to get the best deal around at the time, so I decided to write to both Halifax and Abbey to ask for a refund from my last two mortgages. However, we recently did some house improvements so I couldn't find any documentation proving what the original contracts were in 2001 and 2004. My letters were therefore pretty general, although I did have my old mortgage account numbers. The upshot was that Halifax immediately issued a refund, but Abbey asked me what I agreed to pay in the original contract and sent me a form to fill in. They said if I paid less than the current £225 fee I wouldn't get anything back. I have now written them a second letter saying that the Halifax refunded me on the basis that they admitted it only cost them £50 in admin charges. I asked Abbey if they justified their inflated rate because their staff work 4.5 times slower than the Halifax - I await their response, but don't expect to get anything back!

They are paying me back 125 + interest - my mistake (can't add up!!) Good job C&G can!!!!!!!!!!

  • We had remortgaged twice in the last 5 years and received cheques within a fortnight from Lloyds TSB and Halifax. We advise everyonr to do the same as it is so easy.
    Thanks Martin
