I don't want to spoil anyone's xmas present shopping, but can I just suggest something?

If you are after great cheap coffee at home there are really only two options:

    1. Cafetiere and milk brother

    2. Gaggia Classic (probably as close as it gets to a professional coffee machine for a reasonable price)

When buying a pod coffee maker you are locking in to their coffee pods - you may like the taste today, but you can get sick of it pretty soon. Let's face it, both Nestle (Nescafe Dolce Gusto) and Kraft (Tassimo) don't know much about making great food and beverages - they are after volume, not quality.

With a cafetiere or a non-pod coffee machine the coffee choice is unlimited.

Amazon's got the Gaggia Classic at £169 which is a really good price if anyone's interested. It's also easy to use. I used to have one many moons ago, it's a nice little machine :)

Edit: and if you're going down that route then you'll probably want a decent grinder too ;) I can recommend the manual Hario http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hario-Coffee-Mill-Ceramic-Slim/dp/B001804CLY
Good electric burr grinders are not cheap, and the grind *is* important. The Classic is quite forgiving though.

I use a cafetiere for freshly ground , we have a frother but that lays unused in the draw as I am not a coffee drinker and my husband is too bone Idle to go through the whole coffee making rigmarole so I think this will be perfect for him, that's why I am buying it, and the fact it will look fantastic on my black granite worktop (i have bought the red one !)
  • Bought it, used it, love it
Great deal, looks fab on worktop, no mess and delich...
No compliants here, much much cheaper than going to the coffee shop and will be in constant use over christmas.
    Go for it .........
  • Think I'm right in saying i've seen the pods on offer in Waitrose. But not sure. X

We have a cafetiere and a milk frother, DH loves the cafetiere, but I'm not so keen. Anyhoo, we get through lots, cos the glass isn't so strong, and I'm a klutz. The frother's good, but the glass is better than the steel, and again with the klutz. I find a milkpan and a balloon whisk works just as well.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

My DG is my fav BUT cutting down and some days don't have any

Next best is my Hinari Cappuccino maker. (bit of a kerfuffle though, usually only get out for guests)

    Followed by Cafetiere.

Sometimes I froth up milk with a hand blender.

I normally buy filter coffee on offer. Luv Lavazza, Whittards Columbian, Italian blends, Lazy Sunday. Hard to decide as so much choice out there!!!

John Lewis has a basic Krups Nespresso machine for £64.99, but it comes with £40 of coffee. Any opinions compared to the OP?

    (sorry, can't post link)

    thanks
  • Got mine out and bought a box and it was great! really nice coffee better than the one i buy for £1.90 every morning.

And my friend made my day this morning :)
he has a dolce gusto machine and re fills the cartridges! theres a video on you tube (granted its in german or something) but it shows you how to do it

you cut the bottom of one cartridge and empty it, refill with ground beans, then use another pod and cut it in half, empty it out and use the little black bit at the bottom and a piece of tin foil cut into a circle shape pop it over the black bit and then pop the coffee filled one into the one with the foil in it. make sure the hole lines up so that you only get one hole in the foil lid and voila see here it will make more sense http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_ilDmXSgbc

i tried it this afternoon and it works like a dream, he said that once you've done it all you need is the piece of tin foil and just use the modified cartridge to refill!

im going to have a go at refilling the milk but i might just buy the milk pod packs off amazon or ebay. saves buying expensive pods for the coffee i suppose

good luck it worked for me and takes less than 5 mins :)
