RAS, thanks for that. I have an Argos down the street, they have it in stock and the canisters...

They are selling it at the same price as the site you linked to and they are selling 4 canisters for £9.99(they say that they normally are £13.99 so its not a bad deal)and I assume that I am saving P&P...

They are open until 8pm so I will pop out and buy it!

It's good enough for me and I'll only be using it in an emergency anyhow so it will last me years...If it never gets used so be it!

We eat a lot of cheese for our lunch as it is quick and handy. We usually have a split and toasted english muffin with cheese on top toasted again. Some days it is pimped with Worcestershire sauce, some days with chopped ham or boiled bacon and toms, or as Byatt said chopped onion. Spring onions are also good, as is a bit of chopped red chilli or red pepper. Basically, it's cheese on toast with whatever else bits we have got hanging about, but it does make a delicious cheap and quick lunch ! Lidl do nice packs of 6 muffins for 50 odd pence, so that does us for three lunches a week plus the toppings. On warmer (!) days we swap to Aldi crispbreads and don't do the toasting bit!

Pops - the ebay one is P&P free, so for just over £19 you get the grill plus 8 cans - up to you of course, you might want to get it quick and have a play!

You can get cheaper stoves than the one Mrs C linked to but that variant is very stable, another here http://www.simplyhike.co.uk/products/Campingaz/CampBistro.aspx.

If you are not used to cooking on camping stoves you might want to avoid ones like this http://www.simplyhike.co.uk/products/Campingaz/BleuetCV300Stove.aspx

I (cough) have several but then I do camp. I have a very lightweight back-packer for walking weekends, a more solid (acquired) job for stationary trips and a proper set for places where there are few shops.

When I shared a house, I arrived home to find desparate housemates trying to operate in the dark in a house which only had electric heating etc. I found the torch, legged it upstairs and grabbed candles and cookers.

If you need to use the burner indoors and have a stainless steel draining board - that is a good place to set up.

Ten minutes later we had lights, hot tea and the fire was lit. Then I made soup so we had supper.

RAS, back in the 70's we had the one in the 2nd link. It terrified the life out of me! I think we got it because of the power cuts, as I don't recall us camping at all. :rotfl::o

I'm really tempted by the one hob ones, as would be nice to have an alternative, although I am going to try the wood burner this year.

DH rather nervous as he has an interview tomorrow for a job he'd rather like, plus an informal chat with a recruitment agent. That will be the third agent he's met this week, and he has 2 more on Monday, so I'm pleased at the interest shown. Can't blame him for being nervous, I haven't had an interview in years and I'd be having kittens. Just so long as it doesn't develop into panic attacks he'll be OK.

Possession, is your DH prepared for the interview? Is this his first for a while. It's natural to be nervous though.

I hadn't been to an interview since the 80's and was gibbering wreck, when I had my first one in 2010, pretty much literally.

It isn't his first, he's had about 4 or 5 now I think. The first one was just after Easter, it was an assessment centre and it was his first in about 14 years - he didn't sleep at all the night before. It's a shame as he's got progressively less nervous as he got more used to them, and that was the job he really wanted. Perhaps if he hadn't been so nervous he might have got it. Never mind, I'm sure something will turn up. Really it's only a matter of weeks that he has been actively looking so he is doing well to get interviews. I'm proud of him. :j
But another salary would be good sooner rather than later!

Yes, very well done to get interviews! Well done! I am sure the right job is there for him. The interview I screwed up on, was something I really, really wanted, but now, it was just as well I didn't get it. Good luck. :)

PAH my landlord(a kind of Housing Association)has all but stopped doing gardens for the elderly and ill but they'll be the first to complain if it gets untidy so I have to pay for a gardener every three or four weeks. He does it at a reasonable price but if money gets tighter it could be a problem...and as he's older himself I don't know how much more another person would charge...

I worked for a charity that ran gardening projects for people with mental health conditions - the folk got to do something outside, meet new people and get a new skill, and they offer a highly discounted gardening service to retired people in the area. They do my parents' garden as my Poppy had a stroke a few years ago and can't manage it on his own. They're Shaw Trust - not in all areas, but there may be a similar project run by another organisation. Thrive is another one doing the same thing - they even do the gardens of the National Trust property that I volunteer at.

That really is a good buy but I now have it(the one Ras showed)doing it this way I have done myself out of 4 canisters and paid approx an extra £6.

I must look at e-bay more often and sort out my details so I can get on the site more easily...

The free run to the hospital(rather than using a bus or taxi)was put towards my shopping this afternoon.

I got some crates to tidy all the food in my store(special offer)30L at half price and if you buy two they take another £1 off the price so I purchased 8 and saved £28 so that went towards the cost of the stove, canisters and paid for a taxi home. So eight crates cost £20.

So all in all not a bad day. Well especially as my appointment at the hospital went well...
