HesterHester:- Hope it's not as bad as it sounds:sad:
I agree with those who think that working nights affects your health. Working nights has a huge appeal when children are young. I know, I could put mine to bed and be back in time to take them to school! It was a no-brainer for me. However, it certainly changed my 'internal workings!' and here I am not working and some days struggling to keep myself going. It make you wonder? You're all right; we're meant to be asleep in the hours of darkness and if we're not, all hell breaks loose. Long term night work is proven to shorten life-expectancy by several years and lead to increases in rates of cancer.
Morning all, I've been MIA in something called the Real World, a strange place of wonders and demands. Been to the salt mine and then home to eat, then off to the lottie once the sun was over the yard arm.
The beans that I mentioned were just starting to appear? By the time I got the lottie it was 7 pm, still 24 degrees and several of them had appeared completely. Only sown last Tues, but with about 72 hours pre-soak so ready to rock and roll. I'm gobsmacked at how fast they are. Mark you, they are in a cold frame, sopping wet compost and it's probably tropical in there.
Spent a happy hour pulling weeds out of my potato baulks. My soil is silty and sets like concrete when rained on then sunbaked so you may imagine how solid it is at the moment. I also continued with the haymaking project as I attempt to hold the line from the wild meadows to my left and right (derelict plots) as the couch grass theatens to advance through the paltry bits of wire defining thine from mine. Still haven't managed to regain control of Strawbs 1 and 2 but bed 3 is clear.
SDG, how are you doing, pet?
Oooff, need more tea, didn't get home from lottie til 9pm lst night so am a bit weary today.
May the sun continue to shine on you and sweeties come to those who deserve them................and even Mardywotsit.:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning all, would like to rejoin the conversation, if I may!
HH - hope the news isn't too bad today.
Working weekends is also bad for families - I've done this for over 10 years (although it's not every one, averages every other) and it really disrupts everything, especially as DH works every Sat morning. I didn't do this when our older kids were small, and I really don't like it!Start a new job in a couple of weeks, 2 full days a week, which won't be too bad in term time as one is at school and the toddler will go to playschool; they'll be with family until teatime. I'm hoping that if the new job works out I can drop the weekend job so we can have some time together. Mad thing is I don't think we'll be better off financially, as TC will drop and I'll have to pay more for playschool. I don't want to miss any more of the littlies growing up - in an ideal world I'd not work AT ALL - sometimes I'd rather be even poorer than we are if it means I'm with them and DH more.
Anyway, the sun's shining again - sorry to moan on my first post in ages!

Well, I'm almost packed and flying in 36 hours and counting.
Mum called earlier, Dad was taken to hospital by ambulance, so it looks like my timing is impeccable. He's developed an interesting habit of passing out, which the doctors seem less than inclined to deal with. They keep telling him all is well, he keeps passing out. Yesterday he did it whilst on a brief outing with mum and when the nice ambulance guys came and heard this was the 4th time they insisted he go in until they sort him out. He's a bit of a complicated case since he has advanced asbestosis, but this apparently is unrelated. We'll see. He should be fine this time, but it really needs investigating before he does himself an injury on the way down.
Anyway, if I had a visit to England and didn't manage to visit someone in hospital, it just wouldn't be the same.
Hugs and fresh tea to all in need ('fraid I'm out of cookies until I bake for hubby before I go).Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
:hello: Welcome aboard, cheapskate. Newest arrival to de-cloak gets to to make the tea for their first day, mine's milk no sugar, ta very much.
Softstuff you have impeccable timing with your [STRIKE]hospital [/STRIKE] holidays, don't you? Hope your Dad isn't too poorly and that they can find something and fix it easily. Could it possibly be low blood pressure? That can cause what appear to be faints..... Safe travelling.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning All
If I was you I'd maintain a safe distance from me, say 3 miles to be on the safe side. I'm now at the charming " coughing up yellow gunk" stage and feel carp. I've also given whatever I have to DH, so he is coughing and sneezing away as well. Oh well, it could be much, much worse. I'm just a complete wimp when I'm ill and revert back to childhood and want someone to look after me. Pity my Mom is 60 miles away. DH has forgiven me for infecting him because I've won some classic Doctor Who dvds.
Softstuff I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Fingers crossed they work out what is wrong quickly. Have a safe journey and I'd like some cookies please.
Cheapskate good luck with the new job
Hester fingers crossed the news isn't too bad.
[Bmardatha[/B]. I hope the sweetie run was successful. Would you mind pm me your eBay details please. I think I deserve a treat even if I can't smell anything at the moment.
My plan for today is to try to get some laundry done and to disinfect all the door handles and light switches. Thankfully I have a few meals in the freezer, so I don't have to worry about that. I think some curry is in order with some added chilli in mine.
Take care everyone xxxx0 -
Well my life expectancy is goin to be severely shortened then because I worked a lot of nights ...better nip out and get more sweeties in. Would hate to fall off perch whilst gasping for a sugar shrimp.
Back to normal here - thick white mist and cooler. Not fussed as one is having a couch day with a good scarey horrible book.
SS, hope your dad stays ok.0 -
Softstuff, hope your dad is able to find answers...and I hope you have a lovely flight. How long is it??
I am off to the Dr's myself shortly and I actually have a written list of ailments as I forget I'm not well as soon as I walk through the surgery door.
As for night working, my ex loved it and still does I believe...however, I am sure it made me ill as it disrupted my sleep (he would come in and put tv on in the early hours)...and at first I was working days (before DD arrived)...then when DD arrived it was a nightmare as normal family life just didn't exist. I begged him to go on days, and he did for a short while, but then asked his employer to go back on nights saying he was too stressed to cope with day driving. I broke my heart and couldn't stop crying for days. We lived in a small open plan house and with a toddler I had to keep the noise down for when he slept, then he'd leave for work around 4-5pm and so I was alone all evening. My sleep was continually disrupted too. Awful.0 -
Thanks all. Here's some virtual cookies SDG *throwing them from a safe distance*. Sorry to hear you have gak.Softstuff you have impeccable timing with your [STRIKE]hospital [/STRIKE] holidays, don't you? They keep testing his blood pressure, he is on medication for that, but apparently the last time that was fine.... your guess would be as good as theirs GQ.
Mardatha, get the sweeties in while you can. When suddenly hit with the need for a restrictive diet, I realised that I'd never regret a slice of cake had previously :rotfl:.
Edited to add: about 36 hours altogether (flights, transit, car etc) Byatt, hope the docs goes well.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
SDG if its the bug I had then I wish you better asap. I was wanting my mum too - even though we never got on at all and shes been gone for 25 years

Did anybody read that piece on the BBC site about Greece? The chemists haven't been paid for over a year and have stopped stocking medication. Apparently they buy it from the makers, then the govt reimburses them and they havent done that so chemists have just stopped buying.
Talking about a family who had sold all their jewellery and anything else they could, just to get oxygen and diabetic meds. Times sure are getting tough but that kind of thing show how much tougher they could get yet.0
