I hope it works out the way you want it, adelight, even if that means that it doesn't fit so you can have a new-to-you one.
A lot of furniture is absolutely mahoosive and there is no mortal way it would fit into my home. The front door is 27 inches wide and we had to woman-handle the wooden frame of my sofa around the right angle turn from the hall into the sitting-room. There was only a few millimeters spare at the point where the pipework from the hall rad went into the floor.
Have you ever been in Amsterdam and seen them use the winches/ block-and-tackle thingies on the outside of the tall narrow houses to winch bulky items to the upper floor flats and in via the windows? I watched agog once as a piano was winched up. A crowd was gathering as it was excellent entertainment. I've never been inside one of those old houses but someone who lived in one for a while says that their staircases are incredibly narrow and twisty.
I know a couple who live in a lovely old cottage but the stairway is behind what looks like a cupboard door and snakes around the back of the inglenook fireplace. The tales they can tell about getting a bed and a mattress up there....... It only takes a while of moving furniture for a nomadic life with a bedroll to seem very appealing. Hopefully, once the old sofa has been rehomed, I won't be having to move anything bigger than a chair for the forseeable future.
Good luck to everyone with stuff on the move!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ, that's how my stairway is, behind a door. The stairway is very narrow, fortunately my bed is wooden and breaks down into moveable parts. There is a wardrobe, but it must have been built in situ as the previous owners left it.0

Evening all,
Just done post & it's disappeared, grrrrr, keeps happening, obviously gremlins in the works.
Congrats on sofa shannanigans GQ. I have a reasonable sized lounge with a square bay window & have 3 sofas, all second hand! 2 match up, cream cotton loose covers, one is a 3 seater & one is a 2 seater, bargain from intranet where I used to work, £100 for both. Covers wash nicely, once a year at local launderette as arms do get a bit grubby but keep throws over most part of them. Bit of a struggle to get covers back on but get there in the end. Manage to do cushion covers in own machine though.
Favourite one is the lovely little chocolate brown leather one which tucks nicely into bay window. Was originally from Laura Ashley, very traditional & comes up like a dream with a natural sponge & some saddle soap. Was donated by ex-hubby when he moved.
How very spooky you lot talking about BB cream. I bought some the other day & tried it for the first time today. Was impressed & got compliments from Mum & Aunt when I met them earlier today for coffee. Mum was surprised when I told here what it was as she bought some of the Garnier one which was mentioned earlier in this thread (sorry forgot who said - daren't go back to look in case I lose this post too!). Said she didn't like it, but when she showed me it in S*uperdrug a bit later I think she'd bought the wrong shade, too dark for her. Mine was a cheapo one called Pure by Sublyme Cosmetics, only £1.99 but I was impressed with it & I don't usually like liquid/cream foundations as I'm a bit heavy handed & feel like I'm applying/wearing too much.
Who else has been lucky enough to have a WHOLE DAY of GLORIOUS SUNSHINE TODAY :j:j:j. Was quite nice here yesterday & I got a lot done in the garden but today was fabulous & it was still 18 degrees at 730 this evening. Haven't seen a cloud in the sky all day today, felt weird, but good weird!
Lots more to say, as usual, but totally pooped now so will report back in tomorrow.
Thanks to all who post, I love reading. Kind thoughts to all who are struggling or have difficulties, hope things get better soon. x
Ooo, almost forgot, can't remember who was asking about a bee & whether it could be a nest etc. a couple of days ago. Google your local bee-keeping association & they'll point you in the right direction. x0 -
Hello all. Well, what a lovely day it's been here. Unfortunately, I've stuck inside most of the time, but according to the Met Office site, it's set to last until at least the weekend so hurray to that.
GreyQueen - your sofa saga sounds hilarious, but it's great that you're now able to enjoy it.
PennyPincher glad to hear that your car is going well, but sorry that you're unwell.
Tonight I was at a meeting about a little Belarussian boy that is going to be staying with us for a month. He comes from an area that was badly affected by the contamination from the Chernobyl disaster and a charity brings a group of children over to Scotland. This is the third time he's stayed with us and he's a lovely boy. I hope that the weather stays good as we're hoping to take him camping one weekend. Fingers crossed anyway. Both of the last times he was here it was October / November so it was dark by the time he came home from their activities and lessons and also the weather at the weekends was pretty miserable. Hopefully this time, it will be different.
Anyway bedtime now. Absolutely knackered as I woke up last night and couldn't get back to sleep for ages - I hate when that happens and you feel like a half shut knife all the next day.0 -
We had nonstop sunshine all day yesterday and its hot already today.I love hot sun, shudda been born in Barbados - or married a millionaire who had a beach hoose there :cool:0

Have you been getting your lallies out Mar? Do be careful, it is so easy to burn lily white skin that has not seen the light of day for months - OH toasted his shins and tops of feet to a crisp when we were away last week. I did warn him...Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

Morning all
We have blue skies in Leicester and the forecast is for lots of sunshine and hot weather. mardatha I wish I loved hot sun, I wilt after 10 minutes in it. There is a reason that I'm so pale and hopefully interesting. Although the millionaire DH sounds good
GQ I'm glad the sofa made it home in ok
Penny-Pincher! I'm so glad that the new car is working out and I'm sorry to hear you aren't well. I hope the hospital stay goes well
Mrs Chip I hope the new washing machine behaves and lasts for years. Paula Yates siad that washing machines breaking down are enough to propel any woman over the precipise into madness and I agree. I have an old Candy machine that I brought from a newpaper ad for £40. It won't do a 30 degree wash but it's dealt with everything I've thrown at it for a past few years.
Now no going into shock everyone, but I did do some gardening yesterday. The back lawn got mown and I dealt with some of the weeds that were taking over. I also gave away some of the things lingering in one of the sheds, which frees up space to empty the other one that has been slowly collapsing since we moved in 14 years ago.
Knit and Natter was nice yesterday morning. I finished another hat and have started on a basket weave scarf. Unfortunately I'm knitting it in what I think is 4 ply wool so it's going to take ages. I picked it up in a charity shop for 50p a ball and got 2 of them, 2000m of pure wool for £1. I think the other local knitters were put off by the label being in what I think is Russian. Sometimes being a new knitter has it's advantages.
Today's plan is to chop down some of the unwanted stuff in the garden and to get some more laundry done. I'm hoping DH is going to wake up at some point and join in, if work doesn't call him out.
DS1 wants pizza for dinner and I don't think I'll have a problem with it being too cold for the dough to rise today.
I'd better go and get the washing machine on.
Take care xxxxx0 -
Morning all, don't you just love this weather? I washed all our winter blankets yesterday evening and thought I'd put them out so they could dry this morning. 7.00am and they are bone dry and back in the airing cupboard, amazing. I am currently washing the heavier quilt covers to freshen them up before storing until the autumn. What a difference a day makes eh?0

Morning all:wave:
Can't stay long - the sun is out again :j:j:j. Going to get outside in it & drink it all up for as long as it lasts.
Got a few strawberry plants which Dad had spare & gave to me a good few weeks ago & I've been nursing them in my little plastic greenhouse waiting to put them into a big pot out of the football firing line so I'm going to put them in & plant up a pack of herbs I got from A*ldi a few weeks ago which have been being nursed with th"e same TLC until they are strong enough to withstand being put into another large pot by the back door.
I know, I know, I can hear all you avid, experienced gardeners shouting at the 'puter "Should have been in aaaaages ago" but I work on my own gardening calender as I live very near the sea (I am blessed) & I do what feels "right" here. Spent lots of energy & time over the years sticking to "the rules" & seeing lovely, lush plants I've grown lovingly from seed, tended & cared for & "brought on" & planted out or potted up only to be ravaged by a biting north wind & returned home to find them dead. Yes, completely dead, black, shrivelled & wind burnt or snapped off completely. One of the prices you pay for living in one of the most beautiful parts of the country sadly.
When I first got a garden of my own (over 20 years ago) I used to put bedding plants in on the first May Day bank holiday. Learned quickly, too risky & total waste of time & money most years. Wouldn't ever risk it now till Spring Bank Holiday (i.e. end of May). First year, ever, this year aren't putting in any bedding plants due to previously mentioned antics of neighbours' teenagers, heartbreaking to see them all smashed.
Must dash, need more tea before I start gardening. & whilst I'm gardening. & when I finish gardening...
Hope everyone's well & gets a share of this beautiful sunshine. x0 -
I've barely scanned the thread the past couple of days, so apologies to anyone whose news I missed and much love to be distributed.
I did catch you're heading to hospital PP, so wish you all the best with that.
And GQ, isn't a new sofa a joy? I'll bet you'll be doing more than a bit of admiring of it.
I'm a bit peeved. Bought a nice new pair of pants a couple of weeks back to replace a pair that thanks to my weight loss fell down whilst done up. Wore them yesterday and already they're loose.... I have no idea how thin I'm going to get (since it's not deliberate weight loss, but due to meds and prescribed dietary changes), can't buy things tight because I'm not supposed to have anything tight around my waist and can't wear a belt. I think I just have to buy pants once every couple of months until I'm done. Shirts don't matter much since my boobs don't shrink. Sag yes, shrink no.
Oh, and a mug from my nice new dinner set, purchased whilst on holiday, got a stress fracture when I made a cuppa. When I finally replace what was left after me dropping and chipping most of the previous set, it does that through no fault of my own. I've emailed the company with the hope they'll help (or only 3 people can have a drink at the same time here). I wouldn't mind, but even though it was reasonably priced and bought at an outlet (40 quid for the whole lot) it was Wedgwood and you'd expect better.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070
