Byatt - as you know all autys are different, and extraordinarily difficult to buy for unless you know them really well. Personally for an 11 year old who is housebound I would play it safe with an amazon voucher, DS8 was thrilled to receive an Asda gift card and has kept a little back on it for "later". You can buy a gift certificate online and print out so nice and easy and then she can spend on anything to be delivered to her.
Great idea Kidcat, will definitely get a voucher. Thanks.edit: just spoke to mum and she got her DD a kind£e so Ama4on a perfect idea.

Discomknackerated from gardening today (lovely spring weather for once) so slumped in front of the TV for an hour.
Have you noticed that, according to TV advertisements, only ladies get constipation or diarrhea? Strange that....maybe stress?
On the sofa front I bought a new leather cream one with a armchair in 2002, its so comfy and easy to clean, then we moved here and ive got 2 sitting rooms so I looked on ebay and found a beauty huge 3 seater and large armchair so I bidded on it and got it for £70 quid ex con.......Only trouble ihad to somehow get it froom Leeds to here in Suffolk. got a carrier to do it for £80 so for £150 I got a bargain, one problem!! we couldnt get it through the front or back doors or conservatory doors, and as it was delivered at 7 in the evening the delivery men want ed to get back to Leeds, my husband was fit and well at that time , so he had to take the large front room window out to get the sofas in:eek::eek: , oh dear he wasnt a happy chappy to say the least..............We ended up getting the window put back in at 11 pm... ...............Then we had a conservatory built so I went on ebay again and got 2 2 seater sofas, and 1 recliner for hubby, so id say in this house we have enough sofas for a family of 20, but I do like a comfortable home.!!...........:D.............
Beautiful day today, got washing done, planted runner beans, pottered about, sun is still shining, it certaintly makes you feel good....:D0 -
Evening Everyone
Rather cloudy here today, but warm - the first day it has been warm when the sun wasn't out, the air is much warmer than it has been of late. So another day spent mainly in the garden. We cleared out the summerhouse, it had become a bit of a dumping ground, and not the haven of 1950's domesticity that it's supposed to be ( I have got one of those drop-leaf cupboards with lots of vintage cooking bits and bobs). If I get the chance I am going to leave OH and the cat in the cottage and live up there :rotfl:
I picked my first radish today :j it was tiny but yummy! And I cut a lettuce for our salad tea - one of those from the 'living salad' pack I bunged in back in March. They have hearted up nicely, this is the second meal from them, and I have plenty left from this one for lunch tomorrow. There are another 14 in the ground - not bad for 75p and a bit of patience!
Bl00dy washing machine has died :mad::mad: It is about three years old, cant have been used more than 100 times, and the control card has gone . It would cost £150 to fix the card with only a 6 month guarantee, so probably better to buy another one. It is pristine, such a wasteAnd more expense we could well do without.
Glad everyone got some sun today, it does lift the spirits !Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -

**groan** that's so bad it's good.;)
You have sun because I have left the country. I'm in Bulgaria, so was woken up by an earthquake this morning...bonnie_bumpkins wrote: »It's been hot in Kent too; just standing hanging out washing over the course of the day has left my pale arms a bit pink and tingly. I don't envy anyone doing any heaving lifting and carrying today, imagine if you had a large item of living room furniture to transport :rotfl:
:D Ha! You just wanna know how it went, don'tcha? Surprisingly well, is the answer. The c.s. is about 1/3rd of a mile or 7 mins walk when unemcumbered with upholstery. So, just after I last posted, we got the folks in and dumped bags and took off for the shop.
The leather bit of the sofa is all of a piece and lifts off, then we found that we needed to remove the 3 drawers and also the ladder-style support bit which drops into the frame and holds the leather bit.
Three of us "walked" the frame across town with muggins here in the middle then we made a second trip with the leather bit, balanced on the ladder bit like a particularly recalcitrant patient with her handbag (sack of drawers) on her lap. The frame was a bu88er to manoever in (wouldn't go thru window) but the leather bit was fine as it could squish up. The whole errand took just under an hour and caused several outbreaks of mirth, inc us being pipped by the bin lorry as it passed us on the back street. I thought; You're not having this, love, I've got the receipt in my handbag!
Mum duly admired the matching armchair but decided it was too big and Dad breathed a sigh of relief. They have taken my stool away as Mum is about to wrench it apart to re-glue the joints as it's got a bit wibbly. Must be all the time I spend sitting on it chatting to you lot.
My sofa is GORGEOUS. The leather is actually a burgundy when seen away from the shop lights and is immaculate. The folks only left at 7 pm so I haven't had much time but sat on the other sofa across the room so as I could admire the new one. I'm as happy as a dog with two tails. It goes really well with my faux-mahogany furniture.I also have the old sofa in the same small room as I've got someone in mind for it. It's not a done-deal yet as it relies on 3rd party transport but if all goes well it should leave tomorrow. At the moment, I have 2 very similar sofas facing each other with about 18 inches of sidling space between them. They're eyeing each other suspiciously but I wonder if I might come thru tomorrow and find that they've whelped a batch of two-tone footstools or however it is that sofas reproduce.
What's that you say? They don't mate, they're made in factories by the DFS elves? I'm totally refusing to believe that. You'll be trying to tell me the Tooth Fairy is a figment of Terry Pratchett's imagination next. (It's a franchise arrangement, apparently).
After we'd had a cuppa to recover from our exertions, we hit the lottie and the bean poles are now up and I have started to reclaim the "patio" from the jungle at the top of the plot. We now have sight of the slabs. Well, some of them. The mattock had to be deployed against some particularly evil brambles, mallows and docks which had managed to grow half under the slabs. Sod's Law.
The pre-soaked runner beans have been planted in plastic containers from the Magic Greengrocer and tucked up in the cold frame. I like to grow them under cover as they seem very desirable to the slugs when seedlings and I've had too many incidents over the years when the growing tip has been nipped out overnight. I swear those !!!!!! slugs know exactly how to enrage a gardener.
:j Summer has finally arrived. It's been in the low twenties and flawlessly sunny and I'm grinning from ear to ear. Plus I have had a lovely time with my family and got some gardening done.
(sigh) must just have another cuppa and sit on the old sofa so I can admire the new. Oh! SuperGran hasn't seen it yet, I must invite her over immediately.

Best weather of the year so far today and where did I spend it? Inside, waiting for a furniture delivery that turned up at 4pm  Luckily we've got more sun forecast for the rest of the week so my veggies will get planted this week and the table/chairs are lovely. The table is replacing a too small computer desk and I got it from a CS with 30% off its original price as it had been on sale for a while :T. Plenty of room for paperwork as well as computer and extra monitor and I'm very pleased with it. Now to see if it helps me earn a crust :rotfl:"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

Hi Everyone!
New old banger still going well. Its booked in for a check with our local mechanic on Thursday, so shouldn't be more than £35. Its not great on the MPG (35 on a run:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:)....even if it helps us out till the end of the year...we'll be grateful:D
Sold my old dinner set and OH collected the £375 on delivery of it as buyer covered the petrol cost. £300 is going into my ISA for this year and the £75 has been shared between OH & I. Also sold another £111 on Ebay and have moved to the bank account and swept it into the savings account. So thats over £400 OH doesn't know about for our secret fund;) Have listed a few other bits that have bids on already, so am pleased with Ebay ATM.
Have another shop coming from Mr S tomorrow using a £10 off £40 spend. Have bought 3 joints of meat though and tons of other stuff including gluten free for OH and spent £56 inc delivery, so not too bad.
I maybe admitted on Friday to hospital for a few weeks, so might not be around. My health has been quite poor again and know I need some extra meds to get in me fast and the PICC line is the faster way.
Hope you're all doing fine. So glad the sun has been out today.

I have, there's a thread on the Health and Beauty board, I was reading it for hours! The general consensus is that the Western BB creams are no good, stick to the Asia brands. I bought some Missha BB cream from ebay on recommendation and it's great. On spotty days, I need a bit of concealer before I put it on but for normal days it's great by itself. I paid around £6 with free postage. It takes a bit of perseverence when applying it but I don't think I'll go back to conventional foundation.
Oh excellent, I'll hunt out that thread and have a good read tomorrow night as I've a couple of hours of peace and quietThanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out.

If you mean this one then I can thoroughly recommend it. I need something on my face and this is the best product I've ever used. I was surprised how well it covered imperfections but looked natural and glowing. I thought it would be less effective than foundation but I was wrong - it's better. I have no commercial connection with this product btw!
Yeah that was the one I had seen. Definitely keen on sussing it out. As I getolder I find everything clogs in my pores and the slightest bit dry bit.0 -
Excellent on the sofa GQ! So pleased when a plan comes together and ends up with someone beaming on the inside as well as out.0

That's ok Fuddle, I totally understand.
I will try it out now as really like the sound of it from bonnie's post, so will let you know.0 -

This is what me and my OH are worried about. We're moving to a flat with a very narrow staircase and somehow need to get a corner sofa (it does split but is still massive) in that we got off gumtree. Taking out a window isn't really an option on the second floor. I'm secretly hoping it doesn't fit so we can get a "new" one as I hate it and there are lush ones selling on ebay near us for under £100The best thing for me about living around such posh villages is 1) people always seem to be redecorating and flogging nearly new fancy stuff 2) everyone's got a horse trailer they let you borrow
