How do you cook green beans so that they actually taste of something? Had them today and it was about as enjoyable as eating rat entrails _pale_
This is how I like them: only cook very briefly in salted water, toss in hot butter, black pepper and just before serving squeeze over a touch of fresh lemon juice (and/or scatter over plenty of parsley).
Or, cook very briefly in salted water, take out and plonk in very very cold water until fully cold, then finish off later with a bit of butter, or olive oil and garlic on a griddle, or in a frying pan.
If they're imported ones that can be all too flabby and tasteless. If you want to get used to them slowly they're good in curries and stir-fries.0 -
I don't think Mardatha does 'curry' :rotfl:
UM is right though - don't cook too much or too little, butter makes them nice, but no go for you.
I like them cooled slightly and tossed in vinagrette/ oils and vinegar dressing, or best of all, home-grown runner beans with lashings of butter, salt and fresh black pepper.
If you are eating frozen ones, they generally taste of b all and have a nasty texture - rat entrails about sums them up!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Mardatha - I 'm usually well stocked on green beans from the garden & I just blanch & open freeze. When I want to have some with a meal I just 'nuke' them for about 3 mins with about a tablespoon of water. They seem to keep their taste & crunch that way.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Ah it was frozen sainsbugs ones. I think I'll chop them up into wee bits and hide them in stew or soup. TY! and if we ever get above freezing this year then I have runner bean seeds to plant. (hollow laugh).0

Oh well, that's why they were a bit yukky! I have a whole tray of spare runner bean plants here, if only I could post them to you... you never know it might warm up one day... :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Very chilly here again today and set to get colder - bu88er!

Here I am...I've been lurking! I've been so busy with w*rk and making cakes for the market, every spare minute I've had has been catching up with the flaming housework!
Day off today and...drumroll been making cake! I'm trying to find a Gluten Free and VEGAN (so no egg) carrot cake! Mk 1 was very scratchy and I suspect the high fibre content will make tomorrow 'interesting' and mk 2 was way too sweet, but a better texture...so will be attempting mk3 tomorrow. I also made regular cake to use up all the vegan Icing I had leftover from last week and this. Cut the cake in half and delivered it to my neighbour who has a teenage son. OH and DS can only eat so much cake. And I can't eat it at all really...slipped off the GF waggon a bit and feeling the consequences.
The market stall went well again this week. The dairy free (vegan) and GF stuff is a good seller - I knew it would be. Hence my experiment with a single cake that ticks all of the boxes.
DD who was home poorly has gone back to uni and is sort of coping...so DD who lives here and works in Aldi came to assist me Monday evening prepping stuff up. As long as I can keep spinning plates until DD finishes uni and comes back for good, it will all be OK! Someone called for B&B last minute for tonight, and I said no!!! :T have to draw the line somewhere!
Had a good haul of clothes in Oxfam yesterday, might be my imagination, but they seemed to have dropped the prices considerably? Books are still way over the top, but the most expensive item of clothing was £3.99.

PS you just reminded me I have a tray of green beans in the boot of the car!!! Better go and bring them in!0 -
Glad market is going well, though you must get to a point where you are making cakes in your sleep!
Is that the Monday market (IIRC the signage) in St Dogs?Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -

Monday market is Newport. They take some of my cake there along with the cheese, but my 'actual' stall is on Tuesday in st. Dogs.
Put it like this..I don't need to look up the recipes very much now. I remember the quantities I just have the page propped open as an aide memoire so I don't forget the vanilla or baking powder!
