Can anyone else of the "two-bumps-on-an-ironing-board" persuasion who has been thru this advise me, please?
That'll be me then. I noticed a "difference" a couple of years ago and went of to the quack for reassurance and before you could say "b00by" I was in the hospital in a gown having what little i have pummelled into 2 metal plates. It was OK - a bit uncomfy but the squashing was worse than the manoeuvring. Pleased to report that all was well - in fact I felt a bit of a fraud, although the consultant said "don't worry, I get paid anyway"
Well yesterday was DS1's parent's evening and we found out his predicted GCSE and Btec grades. it looks like he is on track to get B, A and A* grades and B grades in English Language and English Literature :T :T :T :j:j :j
I have to admit that I almost started crying when his English teacher said that. It's such a relief that all that work and fighting and arguing paid off.
Well done to your son - and to you.
I am supposed to be external examining at a different University today but I missed the train so rang in sick and am having a marking at home day. This might actually relieve the pressure on me a bit if i can get the marking done. Also, after being quite bright and with it lately, dad took a downward turn yesterday and so is a bit of cause for concern again but I am trying not to panic. Didn't get a lot of sleep last night, though, so the "ringing in sick" isn't a million miles from the truth.
As you can tell, I am getting a lot of marking done :rotfl:
OH and DD are away for a few days - OH with work and DD to Poland with school. She went down a salt mine yesterday, is going to Krakow today to see Schindlers factory and the ghetto and Cathedral, tomorrow they are spending the day at Auschwitz. A bit of a life changing trip I think. So it's just me and DS here - place is still a tip though
Right I must crack on.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Unbelievable! have a listen to this.0

Morning toughies, what is your best OS lifestyle choice? Ours is definately the woodburner and accumulating as much free wood as we can get, even the woodpile is housed in scrounged builders crates, we seem to have fifteen of them and thats a lot of free wood! The other useful thing I do is to put in 'futures' if I have housekeeping over at the end of the month, I will buy a couple of packets of ibuprophen of paracetamol to go in store or some soap or tea - things that will keep and have a good shelf life. This helps keep expenditure down as things only seem to get dearer as tiome goes by. What is your best strategy? Cheers Lyn.0

Vjsmum- will keep your dad in my prayers today, hope hes ok. ((hugs))
SDG - definitely a proud mum moment
D&DD - driving test - can his instructor speak to the examiner and explain next time that the instructions need to be specific - I cannot tell left from right:o:o:o I know very silly, my GP growing up said it was mild piece of dyslexia which we have just accepted. My instructor simply used to use her hands to tell me turn left etc but for my test she explained to the examiner (and marked the car left and right) and the examiner was excellent waving her hands wildly for each turn. Passed first time, still cant tell difference so anyone directing me has to be visual - sat nava are great cos they have arrows.
Having a weepy day here, no particular reason (had minor run in at DD school over morning drop off and the zero tolerance for lateness, explained situation of all the school runs etc to head and she has said made some changes to accomodate us - interesting that there is a zero tolerance to morning lateness, am wondering if there is now going to a zero tolerance for sending kids out at home time, on time. Currently DD is consistently at least ten minutes after the end time before teacher lets them out and all the parents are upset over it) but just feel weepy.
Maybe I am just tired, had two big meetings last night and little sleep too, and have two more really busy days tomorrow and Friday - DD has school trip tomorrow followed by a party, whilst DD17 has open evening at college which I need to attend. Party and parents eve clash, so OH will cover party whilst I cover parents eve.
Will be ready for next week off by Friday!!0 -
Having a weepy day here, no particular reason
No particular reason, my friend you have been through the mill this past while with son and family, and through it you kept strong for everyone and now you are a relaxing a bit its hitting you, weep, those tears will do you a power of good. Its grief really of some hopes being taken, your reality is different to what we all hope it will be at the beginning and so don't be ashamed of these tears. You are now starting down a different path but a wonderful one, but you need to grieve for the other path.
I don't know if that makes sense I know what I want to say but finding it hard to put into words.
Simply cry, and know you are loved here as well as by your family, and you have plenty of support around you ( both virtual and physical)
Hugs and Love my friend( I hope you don't mind calling you that but I feel you all here are my friends)Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Awwweee kidcat, hugs. :A I know that weepy feeling, sometimes it's a good idea to just let it all out, have a really good cry and then be kind to yourself with a cuppa and chocolate biccy. I think it's the implied criticism as if somehow you must be at fault and a bad parent for being late; after all what could possibly be happening in your life that could cause you to be late?! (sarcasm...). Glad the head is being somewhat accommodating. Sometimes you have to spell things out in words of one syllable (not sure that's spelled correctly).
Well, back from my mammogram. Just want to reassure those that have not had it yet, that it's nothing to worry about, about apart from the slight embarrassment, this is my 3rd time and it's not hurt at all. Not even a little. It's certainly better than a smear test any day of the week!:D
Been outside to look at the damage from the fire. Somehow in the cold light of day it looks so much worse.:( To be honest I am now furious with person next door for being so reckless and stupid. They must have been doing it for some time (ashes in bin), and if it had happened at night I dread to think of the outcome. The fact the smoke was spotted by someone else is a miracle. It's mostly on my side of the house too. It had gone right up to the roof. The guttering and sewerage pipes have melted!
Bitterly cold here today. Managed to buy some suet but the sultanas were definitely low stock. Maybe it is a bird thing. feeding them I mean. :rotfl:0 -
I haven't quite reached the boobie-squashing age yet but am dreading it in advance. How the heck can they put small ones between two metal plates to scan?
I can answer this as I'm a "two fried eggs on an ironing board" typagal and I had my first one last year. If there's any remotely like anything to squeeze they will find a way of squeezing it. Even mine could be tightly wedged and it wasn't necessarily a barrels of laughs. Still, the long trip to get there was worth it as was the result when it came through. My thinking is that the less tissue there is, the more likely something is to be noticed by the owner. When I do my own checks in the bath at home all I can feel are my ribs underneath.
Thelma: if you are getting condensation on your windows from drying the laundry, please dispose of your cloths outside or you'll just be recycling the moisture. Better yet, acquire a dehumidifier. They can be very cheap to run and will cut down on drying times by a fraction.
Does anyone on here have a decent fishmonger near where you live? I'm in one of the most deprived boroughs in London, in one of the most deprived neighbourhood as well, but to my knowledge there are at least three in my local high street. Naturally, this is because of the kind of communities who live here who appear to be very fond of fresh fish.
I went to a new one to me yesterday, which I'd never visited before. I'd walked past it so many times but I took a chance because I had a yen for something nice and the local supermarket had nothing worth having unless you like frozen fish-fingers. Apart from some really tempting Maldon oysters at sixty pence a pop which a Portuguese couple were getting the fellow to open up for them and were eating standing there on the pavement, they had all sorts of good things. The lovely man weighed me up three small lettle herrings and then I spotted an insulated box of what looked like offcuts. I thought "fish soup or maybe just stock". Two quid a kilo so I got the chap to weigh me a pound. What I got was remarkable: after I'd skinned and boned these alleged scraps I had about twelve or so ounces of fishy delightfulness from which I made a fish pie large enough to feed four greedy people. I am only one so I know what I'll be having for dinner again tonight.
Now, when am I going to get round to those herrings and how long will they keep in the fridge? No working freezer here so I can't keep them for that long.
It's very cold here again today. What seems to have not melted yesterday has frozen again overnight.
Placed an order with Approved Food on Saturday and no news of the delivery date and time yet. I'm getting rather impatient and want to get my greedy mitts on the good stuff. Funny how someone mentioned semolina as that's part of the order. And yes, we used to have it for school lunch now and then with a dollop of raspberry jam in the middle. I still like rice pudding the same way if there's no cinnamon on it. Yummy!0 -
SDG31000 well done to you and your son, all your sacrifices and hard work have paid off and you should both be very proud!
Byatt it may still be worth getting the fire brigade round. They might be able to advise on a heavy firedoor for your bedroom? I imagine the chance of a fire starting next door again is pretty minimal now as they've probably had the bejeebers scared out of them too and should therefore be much more careful in future!
((kidcat)) we all have weepy days and to be honest you have so much on your plate I'm suprised you're not weepy more often, you must get so tired. I hope you feel a bit more cheered up soon.
Mrs Lurcherwalker I think my best lifestyle choice would be learning to garden. I'm not sure I break even, but the pleasure it gives me is enormous. I still get a thrill at seeing seeds germinate even after all these years. Everything I know about gardening I learned by myself as I had no-one to teach me - had to rely on Gardener's World, books and magazines. Joint best is becoming vegan. I would have said having the dogs, only they are most definitely NOT money-saving!!!!! :rotfl:
It's such a beautiful day here today - really sunny. I might even bob down to the allotment and tackle the brambles for an hour ! First I'm going to make a birthday card for a friend. I was in two minds as she has forgotten both my birthday and Christmas in the last year, but I'm not the kind of person who 'gives to receive'. She does have a lot of stress in her life, but she doesn't help herself by drinking herself stupid every night. I am torn between sympathy/empathy and being ragingly angry with her for what she is doing to herself. She won't seek help because she thinks she is controlling it, but actually it controls her. It doesn't matter how early in the evening I phone, she is always drunk. I know I sound judgemental and I don't mean to be, but it is so frustrating watching a friend go down the pan. One night I am sure I will end up going round there and pouring all the bottles of wine down the sink. She won't thank me for it but it might drive the message home. So I am going to send the birthday card so she knows I'm still there, although I've stopped phoning her recently because each call lasts nearly an hour during which she rambles on drunkenly about whatever comes into her head and I find it really difficult to cope with.
Oops, sorry - now it's me who's rambled on. I'd best go and get my backside into gear. Need to put the washing machine on a rinse cycle too, as I washed the dog bedding this morning. Otherwise the next load will come out very hairy :rotfl:
ETA PAH your post made me feel weepy!
And mammograms - my sister had one recently. She's just under 4ft 10 and said they really struggled to squash her b00bs upwards. I'm dreading when my time comes as I'm only 4ft 8 - they'll have to get me a crate to stand on!!Aspire not to have more but to be more.

I haven't quite reached the boobie-squashing age yet but am dreading it in advance. How the heck can they put small ones between two metal plates to scan? I don't think I have a big enough endowment to be squashed up like that. Can anyone else of the "two-bumps-on-an-ironing-board" persuasion who has been thru this advise me, please?
Honestly it doesn't hurt no matter what the jokes say and a friend who is flatter than most men assures me they manage even with her and no pain - its not sheets of metal but clear plastic plates. So when you do reach that age don't worry at all, woman who do it have seem it all and are so nice and yes would rather this than a smear any day of the week.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch
