Forgot to add - Byatt if you contact your local fire station they should come round and do a check on your house/flat and talk to you about planning an escape route. I keep a hammer under my bed so I can smash the window if needs be*. They also fitted a smoke alarm for me that is wirelessly connected to a vibrating pad under my pillow, as I probably wouldn't be able to hear the normal smoke alarm.

*Greyqueen's tins of tomatoes serve the same purpose I'm sure :rotfl::p

I'm off to bed. Just got to brave the last five-minute wee-walk for the dogs ....

I saw 4 tins of toms in Mr T's for £2. The good ones. Your comment reminded me. :rotfl::rotfl:

Smiley, it may be a good idea to ask them to visit or it may scare me more, as really there is no escape route. I do have smoke alarms. I couldn't get out of the bedroom windows they are too small, (think quaint but no use) and if the fire starts downstairs I will have no escape if in bed. Plus the ceiling has gaps and is old, the stuff used to make it when they built the cottage a 100 years ago, can't remember the name. Saw a programme with a similar cottage and the fire brigade did a simulated scenario; the fire and smoke took seconds to take hold. If I'm downstairs I have 3 doors to get out of. So bury my head in the sand time.

Actually, was just sitting here and thinking what it would have been like if it had been worse. If it happened at night or when no-one would have noticed (the person put hot ash into a plastic land fill bin resting against the party wall :eek:)...just doesn't bear thinking about really but realised I did not have details of my insurance policy other than in the house, plus other important information that I don't have elsewhere. Realise I need to give copies of documentation to my DD or niece. It really makes you think.

Freezing here this morning. Will have to brave the cold later to visit the dentist. My filling was attacked by a Midget Gem and I lost it  When it's this cold I find I crave sweet stuff, am convincing myself it's a natural bodily reaction!! :rotfl:

I found that Split Peas and Lentils were missing in A*da yesterday along with suet and dumpling mix. The whole country must be making soup and mince and dumplings! 'Stick to your belly food' it's the LAW in this weather!

Did buy three own brand 'snuggie' fleeces Reduced to £5 each. :j Am living in mine at the moment and thought both daughters would like one. Spare for me for when the caravan season starts in three weeks. Going to be cold sitting in a field again but can't wait. :T

  • I have a work colleague who was told by her Dr to do the 600 calorie diet, it reversed her diabetes but as soon as she started to eat normally the weight came back on. Her dr has now told her to do stick to the 600cal diet, alternate 8 weeks on & 4 weeks off.

    Morning Toughies

Byatt - how horribly scary, I'm very glad you are OK. Like everyone I'm sure, a house fire is my worst fear but my flat is upside down (bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor as you come in, living, kitchen & dining all on lower ground out to garden) so theoretically we could get out. The flat is all open plan though so a fire would spread immensely quickly, doesn't bear thinking about really!

The LC diet debate is very interesting. I studied it very closely many years ago. Before it became popular, I read about Atkins and after doing some research gave it a bash. Going LC definitely suited me as I had bags of energy, was eating really healthily as just lean meat and fish with lots of veg. Weight fell off and if I had protein rich foods I never got hungry in between. The effects of carbs and blood sugar/insulin and weight gain are now well documented but I found the whole 'science' side of it fascinating at the time. Of course it doesn't suit everyone but I like how it can be tailored to suit most situations.

Like others have said, if I eat breakfast now I find myself starving an hour later. I generally just have coffee in the mornings and then find I'm fine until lunch time.

Of course now I have Master Baker OH HM bread and desserts are my total downfall, as is us sharing wine pretty regularly. On Mon I found my rather svelte suit trousers were too tight :o I am lucky in that I'm naturally fairly slim and can eat most things, and I hate to think about 'diets' or depriving myself of anything really (I am totally an "instant gratification" person, most of all with food!). But struggling with those trousers did make me think I should probably do something about it. Maybe.... :D

Hope everyone is well today. I'm feeling a bit meh as had a bust up with OH last night which is really unlike us. But we reached the point in the discussion where it felt like he was just not hearing what I had to say, and I loathe feeling dismissed or patronised. I don't see the point when arguments become tedious and circular, so I asked him to sleep on the sofa and we'll talk tonight. Of course I then felt really guilty in case he was cold downstairs! But he came in and kissed me goodbye as he left this morning, and warned that it looked like snow. One thing we never do is hold grudges or 'point score' with each other, so I'm sure we can discuss it more sensibly this evening.

On an MSE note, I used the Cardtown voucher that was in last week's email and ordered 3 cards all with uploaded photos on. One for OH, but also one for my best girl friend and one for Moved-In-friend, each with a great photo of me + them (if that is making sense). I'm not big into Valentine's but it never hurts to spread some love :)

Hope everyone has a good day. It's mighty chilly again and after two early starts this week I'm struggling to contemplate leaving my dressing gown!
Proud to be a moneysaver :)

Morning all thanks for all the tips etc re his driving he's always a bag of nerves when it comes to 'new' things think that was probably half the problem so now he's done one and knows how it works he should be fine next time *fingers crossed*
I've told him I'm very proud of him anyway :D and he just takes after his mum having no sense of direction lol :o

Had a really heavy frost on the ground this morning and a flurry of snow when I put DS3 on the schoolbus  wasn't expecting any must check the forecast..

Have Approved delivering tho gawd knows where its all going to fit!

Washing is on but have 4 loads somehow, where does it all come from?

We had a fire safety check from our local station they were brill and gave us suggestions re DS2 and DS3
Its very hard to inform DS3 but not scare him so we made up a visual chart using boardmaker for him to explain how to stay safe, the fire service do also provide a picture chart sort of thing which can be tweaked to make a visual reminder will see if I can find a link..

We have a 3 storey house and DS1 and 2 share the top room and its always a worry after his ops an escape ladder is also not an option :(so the fire service suggested a fire blanket and small extinguisher plus a hefty fire door.
He pointed out the stairwell would act like a chimney so smoke is a thing to be aware of too.

When we moved here on the estate a lady lost her life in a fire and it had a really profound effect on me,when I smell smoke now I literally shake, its really embarrassing but I'd rather play safe,we have smoke alarms on all floors and regularly check them.

edited to add if you google fire safety posters there is literally hundreds which can be used as visual aids HTH

    Morning Everyone :)

Is it ok if I have a proud Mom moment?

    ....................................

I'll take that silence as a yes :D

DS1 was diagnosed with very severe dyslexia at 8 years old and didn't start reading or writing properly until he was nearly 10. He was 10 years old before he could remember the days of the week in order. We spent huge amounts of time and money getting him to read and write- 3 years of private lessons at Dyslexia Action and two years of following the DORE exercise based system. (I'm still angry that the education system failed DS1 and that we had to do that. His school basically said that they couldn't deal with it and that we would have to find external help)
Well yesterday was DS1's parent's evening and we found out his predicted GCSE and Btec grades. it looks like he is on track to get B, A and A* grades and B grades in English Language and English Literature :T :T :T :j:j :j
I have to admit that I almost started crying when his English teacher said that. It's such a relief that all that work and fighting and arguing paid off.

Today's plan is to get a scarf finished and posted off along with a present for a friend's baby. I'm also wondering if it's worth getting DH out of bed and seeing if I can get some ice grips for my boots. I am so scared of failling over that I don't want to leave the house. With the chance of more snow on Friday I don't want to end up housebound for the duration.
Dinner tonight is going to be shin of beef and pearl barley cooked with lots of onions and red wine..Yum

Take care and thanks for listening to me witter on...stay warm xxxx
  • Just a quick hello as I can hear DS stirring upstairs. Byatt glad you and your house is ok. Greyqueen, have put the kettle on, mind you by the time I remember to drink tea these days it has usually gone stone cold! SDG31000 that's fantastic news, you are rightly a proud mummy. DD&D, I passed my test on my (ahem) 4th attempt! Just used to get so stressed beforehand I would make stupid, stupid mistakes.

Seem to have a house full of condensation today, so need to wipe all that up - the perils of drying washing indoors on airers. DS seems to have gone quiet again so off to see if he's settled back down as I can never settle until I know he's asleep.
Ok, better go do something useful!
  • Brilliant news SDG., your perseverence has paid off!
btw I have porridge with honey and sultanas most mornings (not many sultanas though, so don't blame me)! I HAVE been making suet/dried fruit/mealworm cakes for the birdies though, so any shortages in Worcestershire..................sorry.
    Normal people worry me.
