  • 600 cals per day?

That is beyond the starvation diet. I doubt you could even do it under medical supervision, unless by 'supervision' you mean 'in hospital, on a drip' !!!!

600 cals would leave you deficient in everything. The average woman should eat around 70g fat per day - this alone equates to 630 calories!

More to the point, it would make your body think you are starving, and react accordingly.

I second that nobody should even think about doing this without speaking to a doctor who specialises, not even just a GP.

It has been done. (It's also called the Newcastle Diet). It was under strict supervision but it was testing whether diabetes could be reversed. I believe the guinea pigs were pre diabetics (sorry, I've read loads on it, but don't retain info like I used to). There is a point where the body goes into ketosis and starts to burn fat for energy. This was the idea behind the 600 cals, although the 600 cals were made up of specific shakes which gave you the minerals etc needed, you could also have an extra 200 cals for vegetables. It was only () for 6 weeks, so not a lifetime thing. But it is a study/research project that is interesting nonetheless. It was as I said on the Food Hospital programme (not sure if I've got the name right), whereby they put a man on the 800 cals for 4 weeks and then checked his vitals before the start and after. I was very surprised it was shown to be honest as no long term proof of its efficacy. I think it's also called the starvation diet, and was in the newspapers as the new cure for diabetes, but of course the papers only print the sensational parts of any research.

D&DD, sorry your son didn't pass; but tell him the best ones pass on the second go!

I might be wrong, but I think the LighterLife programme is around about this figure for cals. I believe the idea is that a very fast weight loss acts as an incentive to carry on?

    Not for me, total misery!

I think they use shakes as well.

The problem is if you start eating "normally" you usually put it all back on again, so really it has to be a lifelong change and eat in moderation and the right foods for you. If it was so easy though, there wouldn't be a multi billion pound diet industry. :(

I used to be super thin but somewhere along the line that changed ( health issues and stress and unhappiness) and eating comfort food. Brought up to eat what's on the plate is another hard thing to deal with, but of course back then, it was smaller portions.

Portion size has increased so much compared to my childhood.

On that note, off to check the fridge to see what I can have for dinner.

See, that's the thing. No diet works long term unless it addresses the food issues that made you put weight on in the first place.

Being in 'Ketosis' is the basis of LC, if you limit carbs the body switches to using fat as it's main source of energy. But is is not triggered by low calories - you could eat 5000 cals a day and still be in Ketosis.

The state of Ketosis does two things - it suppresses the appetite and any extra fat eaten that is not needed for energy is not squirrelled away in fat cells like carbs (via a process that turns them to fat) are, you just excrete it. So you never go into 'starvation' mode on LC, as you are not limiting calories. The process is much more complex than this, it's all available on t'internet if you are interested!

The body is quite happy using fat for energy, and for some peoples like the Inuit it is the norm (or was before they were exposed to a western diet).

Sorry about the test D&DD :(

    I got 622g butter from 1200ml cream :j

Is there a rush on value sultanas and ato$a suet?

Went shopping for same and shelves were cleared! Isn't it odd that certain items are cleared in SM's; seems to be items I want.

I know someone that did the 600 cal diet, he is diabetic and a very large man, he lost about 5 stone in 4 months , he now has 2 of those shakes 1 for brekkie 1 for lunch and then a light main meal. He is still loosing weight very slowly and his sugar level has dropped by half. This was done under doctors supervision. He still has about 8-10 stone too loose as a guess
