  • Mrs Chip, I'm really not disagreeing with you so please don't think I am. I can see the benefit of reducing carb intake, I just don't think carbs are especially 'bad'.

    My own mother suffered a catastrophic stroke when she was just fifty. She is paralysed, caanot speak and has dysphasia. She didn't have diabetes but she had high blood pressure as a result of obesity. And I dearly wish she had done something to control her weight before it was too late as well.

    Oh no Scrabbles, don't think that at all! I don't thinks carbs per se are bad, just that for some of us, too many have a bad affect on sugar levels. So sorry about your mum, mine had a stroke just before her 70th birthday, but had been unwell with BP and diabetes for several years before. She was always overweight despite working hard with a manual job and at home running around like a mad thing, did not eat too much or drink too much, but like me just could not lose weight. She was nagged for years by her Dr for not sticking to her diet, no one bothered to look at why she could not lose weight. She was left pretty much paralysed, fed via peg and barely able to speak. Due to peg feeding they pumped with more and more insulin to try to control blood sugar, would not try to control it by changing the food or the feeding regime (she was ending up with very high BS for most of the day).

    Before her stroke she would not try LC because her Dr said it was 'bad for her' , but I cannot but think that it might have been the thing that enabled her to control BS without all the drugs.

    It's awful, isn't it, to have someone you love in that position? So cruel:(.

    Interested in the carb discussion, when I was breastfeeding I suffered the most awful racing heart, sweats and jitters at night and once went 3 nights without any sleep at all. I thought I was going mad and thought it was PND but now I'm wondering if my diet had something to do with it. We ate a lot of rubbish like pizza, doughnuts and chocolate for a while. I found that the only thing that stopped the jitters was having something to eat so used to take cereal bars to bed. Thankfully that seems to have stopped now but it was very scary at the time.

    Got a cat warming my lap at the moment, she has been a bit put out since little ones arrival as she's not allowed upstairs now so I'm trying to let her get as many cuddles as possible. Got to keep warm somehow!

    I've cut out white floury stuff, white rice, white pasta etc and as much sugar as possible, and replaced it with wholemeal stuff, fruit etc. I feel much better and don't get such low, irritable moods as I used to. The only downside is it does cost a bit more!

  • I lost a stone last year by reducing my carbs a bit, cutting out snacks and increasing the amount of veg I ate.

    Once in the 1980's I went on a popular diet that replaced 2 meals a day with a shake (lord knows why as I was in my 20's and not overweight) I lost 9lb in two weeks and had one hell of a headache.

    There is a lot to be said for moderation although I do not seem to be able to use moderation where chocolate or crisps are concerned :o
    I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

    The carbs versus no carbs (or reduced carbs can be a contentious issue), just have a look at the Diabetic forum on diabetesuk, and you will get the idea. :rotfl::eek: The 2 opposing sides had to be separated and now have their own forums, but occasionally spats break out. I am diabetic (hence making and eating bread pudding is not a good thing), and the only thing that works for me is reduced carbs. I take my blood glucose measurements an hour after a meal and one and half to 2 hours after. This helps me see what carbs are causing high spikes and therefore need to be avoided or replaced with something else.

    We are all different, and what works for one doesn't work for someone else. I'm not into fad diets however, and I do not reduce/eliminate a complete food source from my diet for a long length of time. There is currently lots of talk about the 600 cal diet for diabetics for 6 weeks and was on the Food Hospital programme just a few weeks ago. Obviously, people should have medical supervision.

    Low carbing works for me as carbs (the wrong kind) are my enemy. I'm probably addicted to them, and just one bite of the wrong kind and I can't stop. (back to the bread pudding).

    I started low carbing about 4 weeks before Xmas, and my blood sugars were reduced from double to single fingers and the morning ones were the lowest in years. (I suffer from dawn phenomenen). The weight loss was a bonus, it was my blood glucose I was worried about. Anyway, best laid plans of mice and men...Xmas came and one thing led to another and now I need to start again. Decided to start on the cooked breakfasts and go from there. When my sugars are stable I will be able to reintroduce the odd "bad" carb and see what happens. Some people are affected by pasta whilst others are not for instance. I feel it's important to work with your body and there are a lot of people who find low carbing the best thing. After all there are carbs in vegetables.

    My mum was always overweight despite being physically active. She didn't have diabetes though and that was one of her boasts. Sorry to hear about the strokes, but it makes me realise more and more I must do something...I kind of think it won't happen to me, don't know why. Bury the head in the sand kind of thing I suppose. Sigh.

    Just been told there was a fire next door when I was out. :eek: The fire brigade came and have been in my loft (hope they didn't look in the bedroom OMG:eek::o) as it is a shared loft. Anyway, no-one hurt but OMG. My biggest fear is a fire here; it would go up in no time. It's melted all the pipes and guttering outside. :eek:

    OH Byatt, what a shock!!! Thank goodness it was sorted and did not spread!

    Here I go again - :rotfl: My LC allowance was made up with virtually all veg or fruit, with a bit of LC pasta (Dreamfields, delish but expensive), so I was in fact eating probably a lot more veg than most people - big plates of broccoli with garlic and chilli, stir-fried sprouts with bacon, it was heaven! I am rapidly talking myself back into doing it again when I think of all the great stuff I used to eat - but totally a no-go zone for OH :rotfl: so a pain doing two different meals - mind you he would be all up for cooked brekkie every day, but he would want it with loads of toast!

    I would not fancy the 600 cal diet, I know that I would feel dreadful and it would make me give up.

    600 cals a day? They'd have to hospitalise me in a secure unit, otherwise I'd be taking a bite out of anyone who acidentally strayed too close :eek:

    I think I said I'm avoiding wheat products (bread in particular) and pasta is one of the worst offenders for me ATM, so I should be able to tolerate low carbs better now than ever before. I have lost 6K over the last year without really trying. Mind you my hindquarters rarely hit a chair :D

    No, and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone as it is not something that should be done, especially without medical supervision and reading a lot about it. It was one of those research things that had semi -positive results. Very dangerous to do without medical help.

    I just find it hard in this cold weather not to eat the wrong carbs. :o

    But, like you, I love the veggies; was eating cauliflower like it was going out of fashion! Loved it raw too to nibble on. Great mashed, stir fried...

    I guess it's easier if you have the same just without the carbs. But of course pasta is so cheap and easy to make and filling...difficult to do something else. And I love potatoes of course :o, mashed, baked...however they come so it's really hard to stop those. Still cauli can be a good substitute. :D

  • I tend to eat a lot of veg, too; huge stir-fries, soups, homemade coleslaw, any-veg-you-can-think-of hummous... yum yum! I can have moderate amounts of lean protein, (I do tend usually just to eat beans, quorn or turkey though) and I do eat lots and lots of carbs, but usually either potatoes, wholegrain pasta, brown rice, or lentils and pulses. I eat very little in the way of junk as it's all so full of fat. But I do like sweets. They are my downfall...

    DS1 failed his test sadly but has rebooked already for the end of March.

    Got sevilles just now in Sains so will be mostly making marmalade tomorrow :A
