Re scone mixes etc I often use out of date stuff from Approved and just chuck a bit of baking powder or yeast in it they always seem to work fine.
I'm usually pretty good at rotating my stores but found a hovis bread mix festering at xmas from Jan 09 :o I added a bit more yeast to it and it made a lovely loaf so don't go wasting anything when you don't have to XX :D

    Hello everyone,

justa quick post after my long one the other day plus "the stripy cat" is sitting on my lap licking my hands as I type and purring like mad. I can't stay down for long with him.

Been to docs to get some antibiotics, asked me no questions or gave any advice, still got what I wanted so hopefully I will feel better soon.

Having one of those days where although I feel physically/mentally knackered and a bad night's sleep to boot, emotionally I feel great! I can always cope with anything life chucks at me if my emotions are behaving (shouldn't speak too soon, PMT looms!!) Had lots of little chats with friends and strangers alike, the sun is shining and nothing much else seems to matter today.

Have tons to do but not rushing round. Will have a quick sweep and tidy, late lunch then back to the shops to take advantage of various deals/vouchers pkus DS2' s wellies are too tight so hoping to get him a new pair. Finally talked DH to let me buy him a pair so his feet are dry on the walk to/from train station...find a pair today.

Wanted to respond to individual posts all of which I made mental notes of whilst I read but all gone know and need to get crack on with chores. I am sending positive thoughts out to everyone and hugs if you need them. Have in-laws coming soon  (maybe today, who knows with them!) so might not have time to geton here much then away to parents with boys for half-term and no internet, unless I find a cafe which I might well do if withdrawal symptoms kick in!

ps just re-read this "quick post! indeed! ooops. take it easy folks...

Hello, may I join you? I have been a lurker on and off for a while but have finally plucked up courage to join in! I am 39, live with my husband and 9 month old son and have found becoming a mum the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! Also the most amazing thing ever but I really wasn't prepared for the huge changes having a baby would bring. I am now on the unpaid part of my maternity leave until I return to work in April and hoping to eek out my money for the next 3 months.

I used to menu plan and try to cook from scratch - that went out the window when bubs came along, didn't know if I was on my head or my heels! Now I need to start getting more organised again and get a tighter grip on my spending. Our grocery bills have rocketed as we've been buying for convenience instead of doing things from scratch. We are hoping to build some raised beds in the spring and start growing our own veg but we only have a little garden so it won't be loads. Looking forward to teaching little one about growing his own food and having a healthier liefstyle.

I don't have much advice to give I'm afraid but do enjoy reading all the tips and posts when I have time. I'm not sure how often I'll be able to pop in but wanted to introduce myself.

Hope everyone has a good day.

    Hello & welcome :)

I'm new here too...not sure I asked if I could join, think I just slipped in the side door! Nice to meet you...

Re the energy/blood sugar thing. I know I have said it before and some people here thought that it is dangerous, but the best thing I ever did was eat a low carb diet. I would do it now but you need to be focussed on it to ensure you have the right food around, and my head is just not there yet. Does not help that OH thinks a meal is not a meal without a big dollop of carbs! I did an extreme version (Atkins) as it suited me fine, but there are other less extreme.

I used to get that sudden hunger (not doing LC now, so still do but not so bad) where I felt physically sick with it, then I would eat any rubbish I could get my hands on. Low carb stopped all that as it evens out your sugar levels over the day. I had bags more energy - no falling asleep on the sofa as soon as I got home from work. And the pain in my joints pretty much went too - and these things happened within a week of starting the diet.

Eating protein with carbs does help that so even changing how you eat just a little bit can make a difference.

LCers carry little bags of nuts - salted peanuts will do or a handful of mixed nuts, a small lump of cheese or a pepperami, to nibble if you are out and cannot find LC snacks (this is the most difficult thing about it - most fast food / snack food full of carbs). This is a handy trick for anyone who gets those nasty dips.

Ginny - sorry about your knee :( , hope it's not too painful!

So far as the carb thing goes, this might sound completely mad but I find 'non-breakfast' foods far better for breakfast than 'normal breakfasts'. If you can stomach it that is, lol.

My dietician says that different foods press different and often unexpected buttons when you eat them. A lot of people who have to start an ultra-low-fat regime like me will actually put weight on at first because of cravings (fat makes you feel fuller quicker). So when I said breakfasts just made me hungrier she asked why I felt I had to stick to 'breakfast' foods. When you think about it, who decrees what is and isn't a breakfast food anyway??? If you can stomach it at that time of day, eat it :rotfl:

She also says that usually when your body craves carbs, what it actually needs is protein. But I don't think this was in the context of people eating low-carb diets to begin with!

She and my specialist both say then spend a large amount of their time 'fixing' people who have gone on faddy diets or cut whole food groups out without medical advice (often because they've had 'allergy testing' at health food shops).

I've got that 'other' diet book upstairs...oh god what's it called...the one by the Frenchman? Dukan...that's it! I thought it would suit me well actually and it's pretty similar. Only thing is when I got it DD came home and was reading it too, and the thought of paying for both of us to be on it was  I tried the oat pancake from it and I quite liked it, but I'm using the oat bran up in porridge now and I like how that tastes, so it's getting used.

The gluten free cereal 'lasts' better but it's got quinoa in which is high protein I think?

I have found I have more energy too since going on low carb a few weeks ago and the pain has gone from my knees but my hip still is a problem but I think it is a nerve that is causing the pain there so have butchered a memory foam pillow so I have a cushion on hard chairs. I tried ordinary ones but they did not help. The memory foam one seems better.

I have some cream cheese and ryvita thins in the cupboard for a snack and also a bag of mixed nuts from Mr M that was 99p but has just gone up to £1.20 this week. It is still good value as I checked out other shops. I just make sure I count the carbs in the thins as part of my daily allowance.

I have finally pinned the pattern for a coat onto the material today. It was a peice I bought for 50p a meter from a closing down sale. I also ordered the lining and that was £10.49:eek:for three meters. I went for some crepe de chine for lining as it is more durable than the silk linings, I always find they tear too easily.

Our diet has far too many carbs in it to start with, so cutting some out and replacing with vegetables and protein is a good thing, it puts some balance back into the diet (and I don't do it either :(!). I think if we all ate a nutritionally balanced diet the majority of people would feel much better generally and would lose weight without trying. Anything that can be done to keep blood sugar levels even over the day has a beneficial effect on health, and it is the unadulterated injection of carbs in the form of donuts, chips or choc bars that cause the big fluctuations. Neither protein or fat have the same effect, and adding some to the mix reduces the effect a bit.

A small amount of carbs at the end of the day is said to help you sleep, so really we are eating our food totally the wrong way round - protein at the end of the day wakes you up!

I can't tell you how relieved I am.
I am also absolutely exhausted and aching all over. I don't know if I'm coming down with something or if it's just the tension seeping out. Anyway, I am going to make him an appointment for Friday to have his stitches out and hopefully that will be that.

Absolutely fabulous news. Am so pleased for you. :T
