Wedding receptions, funerals and christenings (hatches, matches and dispatches as my grandad called them) were the only times we ever had a meal outwith the home. I can remember only going to the pictures twice when I was young and my kids are there every other week with their friends. Times certainly do change X

I went to a restaurant precisely ONCE as a kid - my Granddad took us to one for Sunday lunch once when we were visiting. I honestly remember thinking it wasn't as good as my Mum's as well lol. I went to the cinema very occasionally too - I can remember every film we went to see (four of them!) - we lived out in the sticks and it was a big deal even though it was just the Saturday morning matinee. We rarely went on holiday either, and if we had a birthday party it was a few friends for party rings, hula hoops, jelly ice-cream and a home-made cake round the dining table.

When I look at my friend's son, he's had a takeaway or meal out at least once per week probably since birth. He has had birthday do's at adventure centres, bowling, ice skating... with lots of friends attending and usually with limos to ferry them there. He goes to the pictures so often he's pretty blas! about it and they will go even if nobody particularly wants to see any of the films showing.

And the thing is, I'm only just about to turn 30! And my friend's son is just turning 14. I think some of it can be accounted for the fact that we grew up in a rural area but not that much of it.
  • Oh, and I was eighteen when I first tasted a macwatsits, kentucky fried thingy, or takeaway pizza! I can't say I feel deprived. I had had Chinese and Indian food, but always paid for myself with friends as teenagers, certainly never as a takeaway.

    Morning peeps

Well, we were up late last night doing a massive sort-n-scrub of the flat, getting the spare room ready as my friend plus cat move in tomorrow for 2 weeks. He is a telly addict and already panicking that we have no such device :rotfl:OH has been winding him up saying that in the evenings we do puzzles and knit, he's horrified and it's hilarious :rotfl:I'd be quite happy doing that, mostly we cook together, share wine if we have any and sit and chat. I don't object to watching TV but find that having it on all evening (like friend does) means you end up drawn to it and I'd miss our conversations and the time we make for each other.

    :)

I would absolutely LOVE to get rid of my TV you're right it kills converstion the minute it goes on. Problem in my house isn't the kids as you would expect it's DH. He hates reading doesn't have any hobbies and just sits and watches TV of a night when he's home. He gets up in the morning and first thing he does is turn on the box then he makes the excuse "it's to keep the dog company" THE DOG !! I have yet to come in and witness the dog watching or changing the channel on the telly so I must conclude she's just not THAT interested. I do have a couple of programmes I like to watch but I am just as happy with a book or a good blether oh well one can dream. Hope everyone is having a good day:)

The specialist there agreed that our current concerns are appropriate and that she will instigate the changes necessary.

I know you knew and fought for this but seeing it written down always does seem to make it 'more real'. Now at least you can ensure he gets the help he needs. Two years ago my sister went through the same as you for her only child, a boy who is now 10. He is categorised Autistic, Dsypractic(spl) and having Asperegers(spl) but he is still in main stream school, has a best friend, keeping up with the work now he is getting the help he needs. Sister cried many tears when she got the piece of paper but it has made it so much easier to ensure he gets the help. My youngest, now 28, is Dyslexic and when he went to school it was something they were only really begining to understand, and I was told by the school it was a 'Middle Class Mums disease - in other words it didn't and I was just a mum who had a lazy child and was making excuses for him. I fought to have him assessed, but meanwhile my son was becoming unhappier and unhappier at school so at age 9 I removed him to home school him. I became one of the founding members of the Dyslexic Assoc here. Home schooling also was frowned on so education dept took me to court on the pretext that I was refusing to provide an education for my son ( there were no home school clubs in those days) I had my say in the dock about how they were refusing to have my son assessed how he was always being punished in school for being lazy, untidy etc, how due to his health problems were being made far, far worse by this, explained how I was teaching him, what subjects, what standard he had reached etc., etc. I had done my research and presented my case myself, his specialist had come along to support and give evidence on just how school life was making his health worse but he wasn't even called and I won my case - if looks could kill I would have dropped dead from the look the head of education here gave me. Education Dept were also ordered to have him assessed, which they still dragged their heels over and although he was 10 when I went to court he was 12 before had his assessments ( 5 in all). He was of course found to have Dyslexia and to quite profound degree. I was promised all sorts of help either at school if I sent him back or at home. I am still to this day waiting for this help. I never sent him back to school, but he was accepted into collage at 14 as I continued his education on my own. Nowadays this same school now is a centre of excellence for children with Dyslexia.

It is hard for anyone who has a child with any disability but thankfully nowadays help is available, although I know its still not always plain sailing.

Sending you my heartfelt best wishes that the doors you need to open for you son do so without you having to fight for them to do so.

    Hugs

We were the same it was a camping holiday or butlins if we were lucky! As for birthday parties I refuse to be drawn in to the madness that is a child's party these days. Like you and probably a lot of us here I remember birthday parties as putting on your best frock buying a little gift for your friend going round their house for a couple of hours playing pass the parcel musical chairs (or cushions if there wern't enough chairs) and eating sandwiches and cake. Now it's all about who gets the biggest limo who has the most guest (half of them are not even friends) and for the parents how much money they can spend. I'm not knocking this if you can afford it but it does seem an extravagance in the current climate. A couple of years ago we threw a party for DD who was turning 15 and we took it back to the basics ,had it at home( no whiff of a limo ) played some games ,slightly more grown up, but still had pass the parcel and we had a chocolate fountain (HUGH HIT!) Everyone said how much they had enjoyed it and were we doing the same next year coz they wanted to come. DD was delighted :) P.S I'm only 43 :D

omg - am gonna be in so much trouble when OH gets home, I currently have 56 rolls of toilet paper in cupboard and OH is moaning about the space they take up - but as we use 20 rolls a week its just means we have a few weeks in. Amazon are doing a deal at moment to buy 45 rolls of and**x for £10 which works out cheaper than my normal shop - so have ordered two lots.:o:o:o

I think you're gonna have to sell this purchase to your husband as cheap insulation.

20 rolls of lav paper a week? TWENTY ROLLS! Are you a small family on a very high-fibre diet or a really HUGE family? I live alone and go through one roll a week, I think.

I'm considering putting myself on a very strict ration. The cheapo L!dl recycled ones were £1.30-something for ten rolls quite recently but the price has shot up to £1.70 or thereabouts. I have a blind-spot where loo-rolls are concerned: I have a disinclination to spend 25 to 50 pence a roll on something I use for a mere few seconds and then chuck away. Although the luxury-brand my sister had in at Christmas was streets ahead and felt like being in some fancy hotel or resort where money was no object. I felt myself wavering.....

    Can I get a numpty award? :o

As if feeling like I'm about to get ill wasn't enough, I have spent all morning in an office where the radiator doesn't work. Ffffreeeeezing doesn't cover it! I don't have my own office, I hot desk in 2 different buildings. Where I am now has 3 such rooms to choose from - the heating is only working in one, but I only just thought to check! Still, am gradually thawing but the temperature outside is dropping as well now.

:) I'm lucky as it is OH who is much more against TV than I, I'm ambivalent but enjoy not having it. He is not into anything like sports, computer games etc, so I don't have to put up with any of that. When we go to bed, if there's nothing to see on iplayer, he reads to me which I love.

My ex would put his TV on first thing, and it would drive me absolutely potty. He had a small lounge and huuuuge telly, so there was no avoiding it. I also like way the way my lounge looks without one.

Maybe yours could 'break' ;) I used to dream of having an 'accident' with ex's TV and a glass of water, but unfortunately I couldn't quite bring myself to. If I'd known then what a pratt he'd turn into I wouldn't have hesitated :rotfl:

I don't really get luxury loo roll, for exactly the same reasons. However, OH moaned about the very basic Aldi one I brought home. We went to Aldi yesterday and bought a slightly more expensive one (but still cheaper than branded ones). Hopefully this will suit his delicate behind! There's only 2 of us, but it feels like we go through mountains of the stuff. Maybe the loo gets hungry while we're out and eats it?

Ho hum, I best get back to the working day. Ate my very nice lunch of leftovers and fridge bits. I love not paying to buy lunch and today it means I don't have to venture out in the zero degrees cold too!

Hope you all have a good day where possible :)
Proud to be a moneysaver :)

Sorry, I haven't caught up on the thread yet, but am aware so many of you are havng tough times at the moment. My thoughts are with you all.

Just wanted to say a quick hello to the newbies who are posting :jand all the old hands too :j

For those whose brains go wibble-wobble or even wibble-wibble (which I believe is a slightly lesser form of wibble-wobble) at the thought of telephone exchanges/broadband providers/best deal here there and everywhere...I just want you to know that I got stirling advice (words of one syllable even) from some knowlegeable guys on the internet forum, who were not as frightening as I thought they'd be :D . Armed with their knowledge and also the knowledge from another thread on that forum, yesterday I ended up saving £204 (annual amount) and told a friend of mine who also then saved £100.

    Bloomin marvellous!

So don't be afraid of the other threads on these techy thingymybobs...they may not seem as friendly and chatty as we all are, but they're very helpful. And believe me, they had to be patient...too :T

    Gotta go. Bloomin work calling...

    xx
