MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »Re Woodburners - Having blasted on about how good we find ours I got Hubby to take a look at how much less gas we've used since we had it installed. He has worked out that we are consistently only using 55% of the amount we used when we were running the central heating. Before that we were at the mercy of fluctuations in the weather and obviously used the central heating more when it was colder. We still use gas to heat the water and have recently changed over to a gas hob from an electric one but, his figures show that even in last years really cold snowy period we still only used 55%. I think it is because the woodburner seems to warm up the whole house and perhaps we have got used to it being slightly cooler in the bedrooms. Hope this information might help anyone debating whether to install one. Cheers Lyn.
DH installed ours this year & I checked our gas consumption for November/December/January against last year - we are also 50pct less but its not been as cold as it was last year. We use gas for all our water heating & I've got the CH timed just for an hour in the morning & again late afternoon before we 'settle down' mind you we did buy 2 loads of logs this year as it was the first year which has probably cancelled out the gas saving. I'm going to start the paper logs this year & try to stockpile some
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -

We re-decorated our hall just before Christmas. Moreorless gutted it because DH ripped out the old stair rails and replaced them with lovely spindles. It took about two months in all because we laid a laminate floor in the downstairs part, re-carpeted the landing, painted the actual stairs (thought it would look nice and it does). Then there were the new curtains and light fittings. It was so much cheaper because we did all the work ourselves, but we were whacked afterwards. Good luck with yours.:)Sealed Pot Challenge 7 Member 022 :staradmin:staradmin:staradmin

Hope the bunny is ok eliza. We spent last night cleaning up after our cat started projectile vomitting, took two hours of her throwing up all over the place, then she stopped had a wash and sat on my knee!! been fine again today - strange how animals can be sick and then better within hours.
Well its official, I have a piece of paper that says my DS is autistic. I cried - even though I knew it and had fought for it, reading something cold and brutal was hard. It does mean that his school placement will be assessed and changes made to ensure the provision is suitable. The specialist there agreed that our current concerns are appropriate and that she will instigate the changes necessary.
Have spent nothing today at all, which is good and meals are all sorted so no nipping out for something and spending loads.
And as I raced round and tidied this morning I now have a tidy house that I hoovered bits of, DS7 did some, my dad did some more and then DS13 came in and did his bits, so for the first time in ages it looks presentable!
Was wondering how it went. You have to try see the positive side know must be hard but eh can now get the support he needs as know you had few battles with the school and with right support things may improve and they can customise plan to get the best for your son.

Gailey - We live near a council recycling centre and they are great for daft bits like fridge shelves! Lots of Fridges there, might be worth taking measurements along to your nearest and you just might get lucky!! Worth a try!:D
Ours put things like furniture/children's bikes/Alsorts really to one side and will sell them for a few pounds. They check the stuff people bring before it goes into the skips. Got two children's safety gates from there for £2 each! There are times when I would just love to be a Skip Rat! :rotfl:Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”0 -
Keep warm and keep well, peeps, hotties and hot chocolate sound like a good game plan to me.

My neighbour pops a large stone or two from the sea shore into the oven when cooking dinner and takes them out, wraps them in hot water bottle covers (you could use thick socks) then uses it as a hotty for the children's beds. Amazing the helpful hints you get from folks.
I wonder if any stones retain heat more than others. Any geologists out there?
Popped up to my lottie at the weekend and pulled a lotta leeks. Its as you say looking very sad and this cold snap will stop all the sprouting thats been going on for a few weeks. Going to make some Leek and Potato soup. Shame on me I have never used broccoli stems before in soups.
The dentist experience was ok once my knuckles had regained their pink colour after being white and wrapped round the arms of the chair during the 'needle' bit (I hate needles). He's quite a chatty man and I felt a need to reply to some of the things he was saying but its blinking hard when you have three hands in your mouth, numbed gum and all the hardware clanking around too. Comes out something like " aaaaaa, nnnnnnnn, cough"0 -
Thinking about you and Bruno Smiley - chin up! Jackel x0
