Did you end up on a reasonably competitive tariff?

The mucked up DD's are very annoying and I think having a different bank account in which you contribute a fixed monthly amount and let them take what they want from that account is maybe the best way to resolve it.

It does put a lot of people off switching as they get sick of the switching and getting mucked around and end up on awful standard tariffs. It's just something you have to get used to.

The SOL 24 tariff is great but it only runs till 3rd Feb 2013 then have to switch again to keep the best tariff on the market. It reverts to the Go Save S tariff....a tariff that hasn't been released yet but should be about the same as Go Save not a particularly competitive tariff.

I have this with BT. I never thought about doing it with the gas and electric. It's probably a good idea. Would you still get a DD discount?

Well yes you still really are paying by monthly direct debit as in the previous example keep paying £240 and don't skip a month and it should all be OK. They might take £160 for a little while then put it up for a while then figure it's too much then lower it....all very annoying but if the higher estimate of £240 a month is going in to the bank account then there will always be enough.

Of course savings will be made and they can be realized in 12 months time possibly by skipping paying in for a month and having a nice christmas. Or reducing by a small amount to £220 per month.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • I was paying £75 for both gas & elec last year and it worked out OK (ie I wasn't in debt come Spring) :D

Anyway, suddenly £135 got taken out - no letter advising me, although of course when I rang they said they'd sent 1 :rotfl:)

They have now dropped it to £70 per month for both

    On my last bill:

    From June 2010 > May 2011

    Elec 4,384 kwh
Gas 7,887 kwh 3 bed semi, loft insulated, no cavity wall (built 1920's) GCH combi boiler
    Nicotine Free since 01.08.2010 :j:j:j

    Sealed Pot Challenge member 1097 2011 £1024.78 :T

I feel the two are connected :D

You will save £600 but if they take £160 they will increase the DD. If you don't reduce your consumption it will appear as if you are not saving anything. Keep contributing what you were paying into the bank account on the same days that you paying now putting the cashbacks and the refund cheque in the account then after 12 months you will see your £600 of savings which you can choose to withdraw or skip payments.

We see it all the time on here. They said the DD would be this and now it's this. Just ignore that. It should be £190 a month.
