    Domestic hot water.

According to my switching calculator you could save £600 per year by switching.

Back boilers don't cost a bomb to run. They cost a lot but not as much as you think if the definition of bomb means a huge amount.

They are just about always 65% efficient. You could upgrade it to a 90% efficient combi boiler and reduce your gas bills by a quarter to a third.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

A back boiler doesn't explain gas consumption more than twice the average-or electricity consumption more than 4 times the average.
You are spending £2,880 pa on just two utilities.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

We're not in a position to upgrade the boiler as we rent.

I don't know. We use the gas and elec and we pay the bills. It's not a problem for us, although of course we'd like to pay less.

We have (from the last quarter) started just having the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening and have noticed we're not using as much obviously.

We're also giving gas readings monthly, instead of waiting for a reader to call.

I haven't been able to log into the SP elec account for almost a year now because of a system fault at their end, so I haven't been able to look at our usage properly as we're not on a paper bill either.

Everyone wants to pay less. It should be a problem. Compare, switch and save simples....and pay by DD...

Push the landlord to change the boiler. Offer an increased rent maybe... If your gas bill really is £1,440 you could save at least 25% on your gas bill...£360 per year. If you offered your landlord £15 a month more rent it might persuade them to change it and split the savings.

I did used to leave the hot water on all the time (24/7), whether that had something to do with it or not??

I don't do DD's, we get paid weekly and budget weekly.

I know that's part of why it's so high, plus we're on standard tariffs for both gas and elec.

It's a HA house, they won't replace the boiler if there is no need to.

That's about 500kWh per year. About £15 per year. If the tank is not insulated with a jacket that would have been £30 a year. Does the tank have a jacket or is insulated. They don't cost too much and can save you money in the summer when the waste heat is not required in or around the airing cupboard.

I don't like DD's either that's why I keep a very close eye on it. If you opened an account with just this one direct debit and continue to contribute to it weekly you could save £50 a month(£600 a year) and in a years time contribute much less on a weekly basis than you do now.

Have you asked the HA when they will be carrying out efficiency upgrades on the property? All HA properties in my area that have had a 65% efficient boiler have been replaced. All HA properties in this area have been double glazed and fully insulated. The government pays for it all to be done.

You should shop around you could save a fortune if you did and cut down. Dont go on standard tariffs they tend to be one of the most expensive you could save at least 4% off that. Plus direct debt discount of you paid monthly but its your consumption that is very high. I dont heat water I dont use, I have a combi boiler its not new either at least 7-8 years old and its crap

I monitor my usage for years now and I try and save where I can and I am not a light user
