15 year old terraced house, two adult occupiers, out at work 9-5, m-f and 60% of weekends = £30 a month elec and £29 a month gas.
Those are DD prices but should see me pretty right over the year.
Should add, we have just had our original wooden framed (double glazed) windows and wooden doors replaced with UPVC. So I am hoping to see a decent saving on gas useage to offset the £3.5k cost of those.A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A
If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.0 -
shellsuit: you certainly should switch, but that does not address your incredibly high usage as indicated by your present DD's. Get your annual kWh consumption figures and investigate where on earth you are burning all that electricity. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

shellsuit have a look in loft any long cable go through the wall to neighbours they might be growing cannabis your energy usage as others have said is way too high0

Do these shed any light? (I'm clueless!)
Now from July to September (which was after we received a huge bill because of it being estimated!), we only have the heating and water on for an hour a morning and an hour of an evening, and if it's extra cold, we only put it on as and when, as opposed to leaving the hot water on 24/7.
I will have to ring Scottish Power to get our annual usage from them, I just wish I could log into the account online to see for myself!
5 minutes after my last post on here, I got a phone call from Uswitch, so I told them to jog on as I was still looking. Couldn't believe they rang within 20 mins of me looking at the comparisons, grr!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

They've pensioners both sides so I doubt they are growing weed lol
I do know the elec is extremely high but we do use a lot of electrical items, especially of an evening when both the kids (teens) are home.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

So your annual gas consumption is 28,286kWh. Not 40,000kWh.It's high, but not insanely high. Based on 3.5p per kWh, your annual bill should be around £1,000, and your DD around £83. Not £120.
But it's the electricity that needs the consumption investigating.
PS: with a properly insulated tank, why would you have the hot water on 24/7-it's just throwing money away.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

If the hot water isn't switched on, we don't get hot water and I do use it throughout the day, everyday as I'm a stay at home Mum.
We all get get a wash in the morning (plus showers but that's electric), and I wash up the breakfast dishes.
Me and the little man are home in the day, so more dishes, then I have the evening dishes and the little fellas bath.
My daughter sometimes gets a bath too.
We only get half a bath of hot water from the tank before it runs out.
I just used to leave it on as usually I'd forget to switch it on and someone would have to go without a bath or hot wash.
I'm going to ring Scottish Power later when the youngest goes to bed, or if they're not open, I'll ring tomorrow.
We've never ever used this much elec, even in the old house which had the same amount of rooms and elec equipment. Plus we were on a prepayment meter there and were using about £17 a week. Certainly nowhere near £30 a week like now!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

Are you heating your hot water from an immersion heater then? If so that is approx 3 times more expensive than using gas. A simple plug in timer will prevent you leaving it on longer than necessary. If it's left on all night then it's just cycling on and off and wasting power, since no hot water is being drawn off.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
