Are you in any debt £65 a month is much lower than us in 3 bedroom semi with 4 adults (2 grown up kids) and we use a log burner to supplement heating. You usage and not how much you pay is far more relevant

1920's semi on a hill loft insulation and no cavity walls

We pay £112 for both with BG and not in debt

My usage 25/10 to 25/11 is as follows

gas 1071 kWh and we dont have GHC every night and is much lower than last year which was 1801 kWh
electric 456 kWh last year it was 474kWh

No debt. we pay quarterly when we receive the bill.
1970's semi with cavity walls and loft insulation. gas heating/water and cooker.
I looked on USwitch and they've said that they can save me £150 a year if i sign up for 12 months fixed with EDF!?

That's about 500kWh per year. About £15 per year. If the tank is not insulated with a jacket that would have been £30 a year. Does the tank have a jacket or is insulated. They don't cost too much and can save you money in the summer when the waste heat is not required in or around the airing cupboard. The tank does have a jacket on it.

I don't like DD's either that's why I keep a very close eye on it. If you opened an account with just this one direct debit and continue to contribute to it weekly you could save £50 a month(£600 a year) and in a years time contribute much less on a weekly basis than you do now. That's a point, we have a joint account we just use to save the odd few quid in, but I suppose we could use it just for the one DD.

Have you asked the HA when they will be carrying out efficiency upgrades on the property? All HA properties in my area that have had a 65% efficient boiler have been replaced. All HA properties in this area have been double glazed and fully insulated. The government pays for it all to be done.

We haven't been here that long but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask would it?!

The thing that puts me off DD's, is do you go for a fixed one or a variable?

I'd hate a different amount due to come out each month, that's why although what we pay now is a lot, at least we know how much we have to pay each week.

Is it easy to switch too? We certainly don't want to end up paying more than we do now

Certainly doesn't hurt to ask. When speaking to them tell them you have heard of the decent homes standard advising that inefficient boilers over 15 years old should be replaced with a more efficient model.

It's quite easy to switch. If you did switch the top one in my area would be Npower SOL 24. It'll appear to cost £10 more a month than the savings imply but after 12 months of successful direct debits you will get an account credit of £105 which then be used to reduce further bills. If a direct debit fails you risk losing the £105.

Fixed or variable. Go for exactly what you paying now. A fixed £240 a month. Then it certainly won't be a shock if it different. In 12 months time you can have all the excess payments back as a christmas gift to yourself for saving all that money.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I've just looked on Uswitch and it says for that same plan (Npower SOL24) we could save £608.12 a year. (Yet I looked on moneysupermarket.com and it said same plan but save £250 a month??)

Do I just click proceed and they sort it out?

Can I choose what I pay per month? How long does it take to sort all the paperwork out and for them to take the first DD?

Sorry, I've never switched before :o

The savings are £608 per year. It'll be a data entry problem with the monthly one. Now you want to clear all your cookies and go through a cashback website topcashback is currently paying you £41.20 for a duel fuel switch to SOL. It takes 6-8 weeks to switch and the direct debit comes out on the day you have selected after that date. You will get your topcashback money in 3 months and I suggest you credit that to the account you are going to use. Any credit left with BG and SP will be sent to as a cheque in 2 months and you will need to put that into the account as well.

Thanks for listening and taking on the advice given. Try and find your annual usage in kWh before you go ahead with it. Ring both BG and SP and ask them. Try and find old bills and see if the usage is similar over the past few years or if it's changed then go for it.

You do get to choose a figure but try and make it similar to what you are already paying maybe £220 per month but keep contributing into the account what you are paying now.

    Ahhh, you're a star!

I shall register now with topcashback (wouldn't have even thought of that if you hadn't mentioned it!), check my BG account and ring SP to get the annual usages, then clear my cookies and go for it! :D

4 bedroomed detached house in the north of Scotland. Family of 5. Double glazing. Recently had loft insulated and see a big difference so hopefully gas bills will be coming down.

£106 a month for gas (£398.80 in credit)

£94 a month for electric (£282.98 in credit)

Just checked online and never realised I was that much in credit. In past years I often had a debit and that was why my DD's were put up so high.
