Surely whether something is racist or not depends on whether the person it's being aimed at is offended by it.
A group of Asian girls at my school used to refer to each other as Pakis, and a lot of the black girls used to call each other Ni**ers. It was acceptable between them as they knew that no malice was meant.
One of my best friends at secondary school was a black girl who used to call me her "cracker" and she used to refer to herself as my ni**er.
Also, I'm a fat git, and another one of my friends used to call me "chunky monkey" and I'd call her a "skinny cow", between the two of us, it was acceptable, because it wasn't meant in an offensive way.
It really is down to what the person being called X, Y and Z thinks, and how they interpret it.

I think this is taking it out of context altogether. Indeed friends / colleagues may call each other what ever they like and no offence may be taken but I completely disagree with section I have put in bold.

Are you seriously saying that if random youths whom my husband has never met before shout across the street that he's a "Jap _______ (insert various derogatory terms"') then he COULD possibly interpret this as NOT being racist? IMO it's racist - pure and simple - no need to think about how to "interpret" it.
"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)
  • ok, so someone starts a thread asking what happened to the kfc thread, someone else replies "it must have been deleted due to racist comments being made".

So this then triggers another thread of 4 pages of people discussing what is and isnt racist?

Would this not be better placed in the discussion time area of the forum if it stays up at all?

Obviously a certain degree of intelligence should be used. If it's clearly used as an insult, then it's highly likely going to cause offence.
However, just wondering whether it's the Jap bit on it's own that offended him, or whether it's because it was included with the derogatory terms.
If someone calls me fat, then sure, whatever. I'm not offended, I'm fat. If they call me a fat tw*t or a fat cu*t, then I may be a bit more offended.
(please note, I'm not justifying him being called a 'jap', I'm just curious)

I'm sure this thread will soon disappear the way of the other one. It's been quite informative though, I've learnt that "jap" is also an offensive word to describe a Jewish woman. I never knew that

yes in your corner you have tommy "I like to call Germans krauts" knocker backing up your views. I wish he was on my side

I think you'll find (goater, goathead, goatherd, or as*hole; whatever you prefer to be called) that I did not back up anyone's views, and never said that I like to call Germans 'krauts'. I said we (collectively), meaning British in general, have called them by that term. As per my quote:
. . . . if you believe that 'Jap' could possibly be offensive when we call Americans 'Yanks', Australians 'Aussies' (and we are reciprocated as 'Poms'), Germans 'Krauts', and a whole range of others I could mention . . . . then you are probably the sort who would kick up a stink at being called 'goat' instead of 'goater'.

You certainly are clutching at straws now.

Because someone with an offensive viewpoint happens to agree with me about one thing (and coming at it from a completely different direction) then my argument must be invalid? . . .

As for you Azari, you are no better than the Goatee-beard fool, for classing me as having an offensive viewpoint without validity. I was merely stating facts, and since when has stating facts indicated an offensive viewpoint.

The fact remains that what could be termed racialist or insulting in one persons eyes is not necessarily so in another's. So - as has been pointed out many times before in this thread - it's all in the interpretation. There's really no point taking it any further.

I don't think I've ever been insulted by being called a goatherd before!

Your whole argument falls down because you are trying to imply the whole of Britain applies these racist terms to other countries when in fact the whole of Britain doesn't refer to Germans as krauts or the Japanese as japs. Only the small racist minority do
