lets be honest here this whole argument started because you don't believe the word "jap" is racist. Several posters have disagreed but you are sticking to your guns. Just googling the word and you get this

you're obviously just a racist who will dismiss my views by resorting to personal insults to justify your beliefs there is no way we can ever resolve this argument as you won't accept you are wrong and I can't agree with you as I'm not a racistThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. Add 'dishonest' to smug, self satisfied, conceited and self righteous.
The Wikipedia article you link makes it perfectly clear that whether or not the term is offensive depends on where it is used.
In fact, it seems that only in the US is it offensive.
Yes, a couple of people have agreed that it may be offensive but others have disagreed.
Until you get yourself elected God, your opinion carries no more weight than anyone else. Less in fact, because you have demonstrated that you are an annoying little twerp with grotesquely over-inflated sense of its own importance. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
actually racist is a bit harsh as you appear to have issues with a lot of racist beliefs, therefore you are not really a racist. Its obviously just the Japanese you have a problem with. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

A person who uses wikipedia to back up his rather weak argument
is really clutching at straws
Notice if you read the wiki article properly it really doesn't back up
your argument at all, if anything it makes your argument look even
more weak.
"Today it is generally regarded as an ethnic slur, although English-speaking
countries differ in the degree to which they consider the term offensive.
In the United States, Japanese Americans have come to find the term
controversial or offensive"
hmm no mention of it being deemed offensive in this country, I wonder why?0 -

LOL.
You are the one with the problem with the Japanese.
I consider them to be an ancient and sophisticated culture that has given and continues to give the world a great deal and from whose modern culture we could learn important lessons.
I also credit them with the intelligence not to get offended just because the name of their country is abbreviated.
I'm also very fond of Japanese art and poetry. :cool:There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

You certainly are clutching at straws now.
Because someone with an offensive viewpoint happens to agree with me about one thing (and coming at it from a completely different direction) then my argument must be invalid?

yes i agree that Wiki is not a great source in an argument, however i was on my phone and it was the easiest to use.
The quote however defends me more than you i would say? The phrase "generally regarded as an ethnic slur" would indicate to me that it was offensive to people from Japan. In addition it just states that the worst country for it is America, it does not state its not racist in the UK.
I'm pretty certain if a person from Japan finds the word "Jap" offensive from an American they would also find in offensive from a British person, or perhaps are you saying its only the American accent that makes it offensive? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I'm clutching at straws because i find the word "Jap" offensive? I am pretty certain I am not in the minority here!
Obviously you are an established poster on this forum and have a pretty strong following, therefore you will get alot of people agreeing with you just because of who you are.
I however am proud of the fact that this country is a tolerant country where racism is generally frowned upon and derogatory words like the 'P', 'N', and 'J' words are all generally seen as being unacceptable.
Obviously there will always be some people who disagree and use these words in everyday conversation, however thankfully the number of people that use these words is getting smaller by the day. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Re: use of the word "Jap".
My husband is Japanese and we used to live in the UK. On occasion, when he was going to/from work or meeting with friends (also Japanese) some idiots (typically male youths) would shout racist remarks at him and most of them included the word "Jap". He does consider it racist as do I (I am Scottish).
I myself lived in Japan for 5 years and during that time I never met any Japanese person who did not find the term racist (it came up many a time in discussions about racism).
Surely if a term is typically used as a slur to a particular race of people then it is, by definition, racist?"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0
