Tell you what else Lidl's does that's very drinkable- Chirchill cider. It's in brown glass bottles, either 500ml or 586ml (pint) at a guess. There is a picture of a red apple on the label and they do that, and the pear version for 99p a bottle (or at least they were last time I was there).

Before you cider aficionado's rush out for a crate I should tell you, I am not a cider kind of girl. I will drink Strongbow at the pub sometimes but otherwise I much prefer fizzy apple juices like Appeltise. I like it because it is more like Appeltise than what my partner calls "proper cider". "Proper cider" being more akin to the stuff brewed on westcountry farms and sold quietly (under the radar of HM Inland Rev) to only those people that were well known. THAT kind of cider eats holes through your insides faster than you can say "no more my legs have turned to jelly". If you like THAT kind of cider forget it.

For the rest of us normal people it goes great with the cheese board and it's only a 99p risk if you decided you didn't like it.

They also do a 2l cider called Woodgate that's nice on a hot day for £2 a pop.

    Hi All.
i cant find a similar thread, but please point me in the right direction if there is one.

I like a good tipple over Xmas, especially Baileys, but find it expensive!
I like the morrisons cheaper baileys type drink (Irish cream liqueur), and have seen a Lidl one for £6.99 for 70cl. Does anyone know if it tastes ok?
Also, does anyone have any tips/recommendations for buying alcohol that tastes the same (or very similar) as the 'real' thing?
    Such as Bacardi, Taboo etc?

Not sure if this still happens but, for a very long time, Mr T's and A$da's Irish cream liqueur used to be made on the same production line as "St Brendan's", the premium brand that uses Bushmill's whiskey. It is very nice stuff - better than Baileys IMHO. The only difference between the St B's and the own brand was the bottles.

  • I buy 'Vodkat' vodka. If you're not a fan of proper strong vodka this is a great and cheaper alternative. I also used it to make sweets vodka and it worked really well. Plus in my cocktails I don't notice the difference at all.

My friend is a huge vodka drinker and she was happy to drink this stuff as well. You can get a litre for around £8/£9 in Iceland etc.

  • We did a tasting session once with cheap versions of Southern Comfort and Peach Schnapps and Malibu, probably from Aldi's.
All were good and we were hard pushed to tell the difference between that and the real thing. The peach schnapps is called Oscars but can't remember the southern comfort, possible Southern Belle? They are all fine anyway, along with their version of Baileys and also a cherry brandy (but that may have come from Lidl!).
  • M&S made some reductions last xmas and I got a bottle of their 'Baileys' mint flavour for about 4/5 quid. Here's hoping they'll do the same this year!
