    I think there are a few with genuine abilities, but many many more scammers.

    seen too many people who can ill afford to pay these mediums get ripped off, I fall into that category and paid so must be a mad or genius :A think I prefer the genius option

    I think a lot of psychics make sweeping generalisations and play a guessing game related to how a person reacts. I agree that people tend to only remember the bits that eventually occur and forget the rest of the predictions. I believe any true psychic would not use their gift to profit from people or purely as entertainment. However, I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.
  • I can tell the future and I can put you in touch with all your dead relatives but you must read the terms and conditions first and agree to them.

    1. Nobody loves you and everyone that you wish to talk to no longer have the necessary equipment.
    2. Anyone that wishes to talk to you could write or phone and stop bothering the rest of us.
    3. It is possible that the medium could be a lush and needs money for their habit.
    4. You must believe every excuse I give as to why it didn't work.
    5. You can take no action against me on the grounds that I am completely daffy and any judge worth his salt will agree.

    Indicate your acceptance of these terms and conditions by sending a cheque to ,................
    It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.

    I always wonder why, when we "pass over" to the other side or whatever you want to call it, we all develop appalling memories.

    As living humans we have a fantastic capacity for language and description and making ourselves understood yet when we die and supposedly have this amazing opportunity to connect with our living loved ones we're suddenly terrible at any communication and can only introduce ourselves in vague, wishy-washy terms. If you actually listen to the conversation the psychic is having with the dead person this is pretty much how we'll all sound when dead......

    "My name begins with an R, maybe Rose, Rosemary, Ruby (help me out), Ruth, yes Ruth that's my name. And the month of June means something to me but I'm not sure if it's my birthday, your birthday or cousin Sid's birthday or actually even a birthday. Oh no, It's when I died, I knew it was important, just couldn't remember why. Now I'm with an older women but can't tell you who it is. Is it my mum? Oh, what was that? Ah, it is my mum, can't believe I didn't recognise her.

    (insert the following bits of waffle about flowers in the garden, missing jewellery, always floating around you and sending feathers, how I knew you were all there/wanted to be there/heard what you whispered to me when I died)

    Right, I'm going now (after only 2 minutes - you'd think on this momentous occasion I'd have more to say but no, I'm off). I could tell you something really mind blowing about the afterlife but instead I'll just end on a cliche about still loving you and death not being the end...."

    Next time you listen to a psychic just imagine if they were really having a conversation how pathetic it would sound.

    I drew no conclusions about spirits, other worlds or the like. Personally, I don't think it was what you describe as a "broad enough statement". Perhaps if he had referred to travelling/going abroad generally when I wasn't (but had the Iceland thing going on) would have fitted your description but that's not what he said. Why did he choose to say Iceland? This happened in the 1990s before financial crisis/volcanoes etc when Magnus Magnusson was about all the country was known for :)

    Sorry, I wasn't actually meaning to quote you per se, more give an argument using that as inspiration if you get my drift. Should have made that clearer. I wasn't there, I don't have a recording and transcript, it was your experience and I was not trying to shake the validity of the experience for you. If that was meaningful for you enough to post here, I don't want to undermine that in any way.

    Sure, maybe some people are sensitive to a greater or lesser degree, I have no idea. But as a topic I've studied quite widely, I can assert that the majority of people taking money for 'psychic services' are charletans.

    Why Iceland? No idea, but you would be surprised how broad some narrow-sounding statements are. Demographic profiling by age, social class etc can narrow the field a lot. A certain age and class is more likely to take a coach trip to Spain, for instance, which may feel like a direct hit (if we're going to use the parlance) which if confirmed can be mined to drive it home.

    'Oooh what's this house with a 2 in the number?' - Almost all streets have all the usual 2, 12, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 32, etc. As street numbering starts at 1 usually, there is a pretty decent cluser of 2's on each modest length street. And once you add in neighbours 'yes that's right, i didn't mean *you* lived at a house with a 2, I mean it was something you would see every morning, yes?', etc you're really upping the odds.

    I am not trying to say nobody is sensitive to anything, but just want to make sure people go into this with their eyes open. Perhaps somebody will win the $1M offered by Randi and I will be amongst the very first to celebrate it. But in the meantime there are so many fakes out there cynically trying to part the vulnerable from their cash it upsets me.

    I hope I've clarified a bit - as you'll see I didn't mean to challenge your beliefs or discount your experience, just used it as inspiration for a wider case.
  • Firstly - absolutely 100% agree that so called 'psychics' are all frauds. Totally agree about Derren Brown (he's a better 'psychic' than those who profess to be genuine).

    The point is, what use are they..? Haven't seen any crawling out of the woodwork to help solve anything important (eg., Madeleine McCann).

    Anyone recall Sylvia Browne..? (she was a frequent guest on the Montel Williams Show). She was so awful - I find it hard to believe anyone could be taken in by her.
