Not just apple and mint jelly, there are more options. So far I've made apple and chilli relish by adding a little cider vinegar and some home grown chillies to the cooking down apples. I planted a sprouting ginger earlier in th year and used the huge root to make apple and ginger jelly. Friends gave me the quinces from their trees and apple and quince jelly is much nicer than quince alone.

    Hi all,

I've been given bags and bags of apples from friends who have discovered that we eat a lot of apples in our house... and well we do but we will never get through this many before they start to go off. So, I am hoping that someone may be able to give me some inspiration as to what to cook with them. I don't like Pork so that one is out and we have o/d on crumble lately. I do have about 600gms of blackberries in the freezer and a frozen bag of summer fruits from the supermarket. I feel the need to be a Yummy Mummy and come up with something amazing that we are all going to love. I do a lot of baking and have most of the usual store cupboard ingredients in...

I did think about Jam but that was only because I wanted to buy the new Jam maker from Lakeland but don't think I can really justify the expense just to use up the apples!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Thanks in advance

Oh I'm dead jealous as apples are so versatile

I'd tackle them by pureeing and freezing as many tub as I could for the cold winter months ahead. Then what is left can be used in curries, pies, cakes, charlottes and even flapjacks. If you store them in a cold dark place though they should keep for a few weeks

I have a recipe book for apples - £2 from bookends. Might be worth having a look for something like this!

Don't forget you can make apple chips!

By apple chips do you mean potato chips but made out of apples? - obviously not potatoes and deep fried?

    Thanks

Until you decide what to do with your apples, the best way to store them is to wrap each one in a piece of newspaper, and store in a box, in a cool dark place. They should last you quite a while, dont wash them until you are ready to eat them though, incase you wrap them while they are a bit damp, and they could rot.

Cooking apples never last long in this house, they are made into crumbles, and any left over are prepared and frozen.

  • I've sucessfully made a Nigella Lawson Spiced Apple chutney out of apples people have given me - this is the closest I could find to the recipe on the web - the original recipe is in the Domestic Goddess book

It's really nice and cheap to make - and you could vary the spice depending upon what you like. The recipe made about 3 jars when I made it (I've made 2 batches, one with more chili than the other!)

    Hi Mummy Jo,

There's an earlier thread that should give you even more ideas so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.
