Tried this but made no difference. I've got the email confirming registration in 2005 plus original packaging with matching number too. Will try support in the morning I guess.

Received my return box and envelope today and will be sending my 1st gen Nano back to Apple tomorrow.
By the way, the replacement is a 1st gen Nono (not the latest model) - same colour and capacity. Obviously Apple need to replace a few million of them, so it is quite easy for them build new replacements in Asia - all the components would be very cheap now, they know what colours and capacities to order from the factory as they have your serial numbers.
Below are repalcement Nano photos - some US customers are already receiving their replacements."Retail is for suckers"

Ah so its not or unlikely to happen with the 2nd gen nanos then.
I have a 2nd gen refirbished nano (bought with paycheque from my first "proper" job so has some sentimental value!) I don't use it anymore, still works fine and had wondered if they;d be renewing everything but if the only reason they are renewing the 1st gen is because it has a technical fault I'm doubting it would apply to any other type or they'd be recalling that back also.
Mixed blessing, the nano I have is a bit scuffed but still good to go. I would love a new one as it'd look better but I don't need one so I should stop being greedy!!0 -

It is only specific iPods with specific serial numbers, maybe yours isn't one of these that is under recall?0 -
Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.
This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.
Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.
Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.0 -

As for paying over the odds, this is a discussion over the recall not a debate over Apple. If you wish to debate the pro's and con's of Apple products there are more appropriate boards you can use.
I wouldn't say excellent i'd say it's what you'd expect in a similar fashion to the car industry who issue recalls on defects for decades afterwards...0 -
