Coats are quite easy to make, I made some for the rescue dogs and although I found a pattern I ended up just draping some scrap material over one of my dogs and drawing the shape I wanted to make my own template. Used the scrap material to make a prototype to get the strap measurements and everything (Sharpie pen is fab for making marks on where you want straps to go, velcro to go, etc) then made the real thing with a nice warm fleece lining.

Here's a template I found online a while ago though

Do you know they are dogs and therefor have fur coats so the idea of dressing them up is not needed for them it is just a statement for you.

Gawd, some people on here do spout some utter nonsense.

My dog's a staffie/whippet cross. Very thin coat and no undercoat (for your benefit crazyguy, as you clearly need some guidance, the heavier coated dog's have 2 layers of fur).

Mine definitely needs to wear her coat come the winter. It's a very plain and practical one, but I think she's outgrown it again - so I shall be looking for a new one soon.

And why has crazyguy created an alter-ego to 'like' his own posts? :rotfl:

Because he's like the kid who had no one to play with, so his mum tied a bone round his neck so the dog would like him.

You just get really efficient at bathing them!

I have a bichon, after our walks at this time of year he's only white on the top half, there's a tide mark along his side and under that its black.

In some ways it might be better than a dark haired dog, at least I can clearly see what's coming into my house and onto my sofa!

I've got a Bichon, she's an ex puppy farm girl and her coat isn't very thick, it's getting better but you can see an awful lot of skin through it and that's why she'll be wearing a warm coat when it gets really cold. I swore blind when I got her that she wouldn't be getting bathed a lot but they don't half attract the muck and dirt :rotfl:.

That's similar to the ones I make, they look a bit like babies bibs only larger.

  • Here's my dog in his pajamas, heating goes off at night in our house.

and here in his winter coat.

He would be uncomfortable without them, in winter he would wake up needing a pee at night because he was cold without the pajamas.

Awww that's a cute hound! And to those saying "dogs have fur coats they don't need coats (or pyjamas)" - one of my dogs doesn't have a coat - but he's a collie/german shepherd/whatever else but there's definitely a fair whack of those two breeds in him cross and has a huge thick coat. The other... is an ex-racing greyhound - like lots of them, she's got a bald backside and, while they naturally tend to have very little body fat (and insulation from that) on them, she falls on the leaner side of the norm (perfectly healthy - just one of nature's supermodels) - she's even sparser furred on her underbelly... she definitely needs a coat on.

Haven't got a photo of her wearing it on my photobucket but we paid out a fairly decent chunk of cash for her coat since it was made to measure, to our colour choices and the quality on it's fantastic and she has a combo one from AK creations http://www.akcreations.co.uk/combocoat.html with a fleecy coat she can wear on its own or on the inside (it's even got a snood to keep her neck warm and you can fold it up so she can be a lil houndy hoodie), a waterproof that you can again wear on its own if it's wet but warm (Her Pointyness does NOT do rain) or the two together - I'm normally a cheapskate but it's fantastic and she's such a small hound that it's been well worth the outlay to get one made to properly fit her. She's also got a housecoat I made her out of two cheap fleecy blankets - it was an experiment but it seems to have worked ok (hubby refuses to let me get her pyjamas).

Some dogs really do need that extra layer of warmth - not just greyhounds, but they're the breed that came to mind because they're the one I happen to have hogging the sofa at the moment.

I'm looking for a coat for one of my staffies, his fur is really thing and he basically has none on his chest and tum.

Have you looked at thunder coats?

Most coats I find don't cover the chest, which is what I want covered.

Or maybe pop along to pets at home etc with the dogs and try some on.

Thundershirts are not coats, they are a stress relief coat, lightweight but stretchy, I have one for my staff cross and it is amazing, really calms her down as she goes manic when people come in and she frightens then and has to be shut out of the room (I've got a dog trainer but nothing works for this problem, she is just very excitable and worse is she has auto immune so if she catches her nails they rip out), when she has the thundershirt on she barely bats an eyelid at them and all of my friends cannot believe it is the same dog.

I have 2 dog coats from 3 peaks which I got at Pets at home in the sale so they might be discontinued - they are red and black. I have had several but these are great, they have a large pad that goes right under the chest and to the belly and it straps around the middle of the belly rather than the chest so all of her underneath is protected from the wet grass, but this has been the best because it protects the underbelly as well.

It is this one, see it has a longer and thicker bit underneath to protect the belly and chest: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Small-Dog-3-Peaks-Jacket-Coat-Small-Padded-Rambler-Parka-2-99-/160682489761?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&hash=item25696c37a1

This says it is the rambler range but I am sure it is the expedition range, it is really padded and thick.
