You might shudder and they might not be the cheapest, but we got ours from Pets at Home - good thing we did too - we went through four different refunds trying to find the right size and shape - was a nightmare, for the convienience i would recommend it... you could take them in to try them on there and there too - I couldn't at the time, the two pups weren't 'house' trained...

I have a Pets at Home nearby and look in there weekly but they never have any waterproof coats in, just the fashion coats like they have on their website for around £10. I will be looking in again today as they keep getting new stock.

That can work two ways as well so kindly post the proof that fashion coats are a needed. ?????????

I have had dogs most of my life and as long as they are in a heated house then the idea of jumpers and man made coats are just a fashion thing.

The time when you may require a pet coat would be when the dog is sick.

Dogs have been about for a long long time and do you think years ago people nipped into a store and purchased a silly looking item of pet wear, of course not it is merely out of choice.

My dogs go outside to do their business. I understand some other people are not so bothered about hygiene as I am.

Years ago dogs (like greyhounds for example) were killed as soon as they couldn't hunt etc. Now they get to live a full life in some cases.
Dogs used to be killed for having mange, now it's treatable. Things move on and you are being left behind.

Most greyhounds and many lurchers have thin coats and little body fat and may suffer from the cold in the winter. The dog will need a warm coat, preferrably waterproof and fleece-lined. Coats for other dogs will not fit a sighthound's body shape and a specific greyhound coat will be needed.

If you turn off your heating at night, the dog may need a fleece housecoat to wear during the night.

If the dog's ears feel cold to the touch, the animal is feeling cold and will need to be wearing a coat.

I don't get the judgement towards coats on dogs, even from supposed dog lovers.

I can only assume that these people either just don't care about a dog's potential suffering, or have never owned a dog that would benefit from wearing a coat in cold or wet weather. If you've only ever owned GSDs, or huskys or collies then I suppose you might forget other dogs are different.

My two wear coats for two reasons, one is that they have curly non shedding fur with no undercoat which is not that great at keeping them warm, they both shiver like mad if they get cold and wet, with their coats on they are much more comfortable and enjoy their walks much more. The second reason is that its about a thousand times easier to clean mud and horse poo off a waterproof coat than off a fluffy dog, both for me and them.

If you don't like dogs to wear coats, feel free not to put one on yours, but come on! Its not exactly like putting them in a pink tutu or a t shirt that says 'Princess' is it? smiley-rolleyes010.gif

Here's my dog in his pajamas, heating goes off at night in our house.

and here in his winter coat.

He would be uncomfortable without them, in winter he would wake up needing a pee at night because he was cold without the pajamas.

    I couldn't agree anymore.

You would think I was asking about dressing them up in ridiculous clothing from the reply I got above. I wouldn't actually say a dog wearing a coat was dressing them up. I also clearly stated that I was looking for a plain black coat not somthing bright and colourful.

I don't like to see dogs dressed up in pink tutu's, hoodies and tshirts - I think it's a bit OTT. However coats are essential for a lot of different breeds that do not have the extra fat or thick coat to keep them warm. Not only are coats to keep them warm but also to keep them dry and clean.

Not at all I merely pointed out the fact that people purchase these items out of a sense of some sort of fashion item so kindly refrain with your stupid comments in future. :p

Caroline_a is usually a very sensible and knowledgeable poster but didn't seem to understand the point (obviously she wasn't as rude as crazy guy) hopefully now she does!

Yes I know, I didn't want to include names :) so I just stated 'from the reply I got above' not meaning anyone elses post.

ETA: Whilst Caroline also didn't agree with dog coats, she was rather helpful. Her post didn't come across rude.
