Dog Coats

Anyway, being Staffies, most coats that fitted lengthwise wouldn't do up around the chest or belly. A few people ended up modifying the coats to fit, so an alternative if you can't find a properly fitting coat is to get one that has the right size body piece and add or remove fabric from the straps to fit properly.
I imagine there are also many individuals who make custom coats, made to measure, and probably many at reasonable prices.
I'm sure I have seen the handmade coats on eBay, made to order. I used to enjoy textiles so I think I would be able to make one myself if I could see how they are made, I'm sure they are easy enough.
I've just had the pups out for a walk in their new coats. Usually one won't walk and keeps stopping, I don't think he enjoys his walks as much as his brother but he sure enjoyed his walk in his new coat. They both came home lovely and toastie even though it's really icy cold out there!A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -

and here in his winter coat.
He would be uncomfortable without them, in winter he would wake up needing a pee at night because he was cold without the pajamas.
The photo in the pyjamas really made me smileI knew greyhounds needed extra "padding" for lying on but didn't know they needed pyjamas!
I know it's a "practical" thing but must admit...he looks adorable. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -
I saw a woman walking he 4 bichon freise type dogs the other day and they were wearing these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Waterproof-Coat-Trouser-Suit-Dogs-all-sizes-/280763428124?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&var=&hash=item870dd40396 All in different colours - blue, yellow, pink and green. I swear the ones I saw had feet in them too but maybe not.
I have to admit I did laugh when I saw her.0 -

I keep seeing that listing everytime I search for dog coats but never actually clicked on and looked at all the photos until now. I'm not suprised people look and laugh, I think those suits are ridiculous. Have you seen the one in the red suit sitting on the laptop, awww :rotfl:
And whats with those things around the ears in some of the photo's - aren't they for dogs with long ears so their ears don't get in their dinner when eating? I had a King Charles Spaniel (she sadly passed away 2 months ago), I had to wash and brush her ears everyday because of tats and food getting in her fur but I would never had put one of those things round her head even indoors!A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -

I had to laugh at how P!$$ed off that bichon looks in the photo on ebay, they are not a breed that appreciates being laughed at!0 -
Can't believe all the people saying "dogs don't need coats." Perhaps YOUR dog does not need one, because it's a very big dog, has long fur, or rushes around madly every time it goes outside, but do not assume all dogs are the same. Some dogs are small and lose their body heat fast. Others have short fur. Others may not like to run around due to a relaxed temperament (my dog only trots) or old age. Whatever the reason, it is ALWAYS a good idea to put a coat on our dogs if they're shivering or their ears or paws feel cold to the touch. Putting a coat on them is far preferable to them catching pneumonia. I monitor my dog's temperature on walks and take his coat off if he's warmed after a while but not all dogs run around madly. Do remember some dogs can't even be let off the lead, which doesn't allow for a lot of running. I would NEVER subject my dog to wearing a coat merely to look "trendy" like some sadists who dress their pets like dolls. The coat has a purely practical purpose: warmth. You can check how hot or cold your dog is by touching or observing the inside of his ear flaps. If hot, they will feel warm and look pink or red (the ears are always flushed after exercise. Kind of like what happens to humans on our cheeks). If cold, they'll be freezing and worryingly pale.
Back on topic: OP, I got sick of the problems you describe (not being able to find one that fits) so in the end I modified one I'd bought using my sewing machine, and made another from scratch. If you know someone who sews, get them to make one for you.0 -

I have to admit, if someone was chucking me outside for a wee, I'd be wanting something to keep me warm too.0

She was carrying one as well, it probably could not walk because of the shame. I've not seem pictures anywhere else, I just saw these last week and this thread reminded me. I think they were a posher sort though, certainly not black elastic round the cuffs.
I've just looked again - how may photos do you need?? Are you talking about the afghan with his paw on the laptop, LMAO. I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall in that house, that day!!
I could not imagine having a small white dog where we live, mine come back covered in horse poo and god knows what else, from the fields.0 -

You just get really efficient at bathing them!
I have a bichon, after our walks at this time of year he's only white on the top half, there's a tide mark along his side and under that its black.
In some ways it might be better than a dark haired dog, at least I can clearly see what's coming into my house and onto my sofa! :eek:0
